A freind of mine, was ask to pick out certain equipment for a guy who starting a studio, 10 grand is the limit, i have ideas of what they should get, but i want more opinions, the main genre is rap, they wnat to use pro tools,

so what all would they need

About 2-3k worth of lava lamps.

These are essential. The folks on this board said so :D

Are you looking to spec out equipment for a Pro Tools rig or to setup a room? I'm not clear on what you are asking. If it is for recommendations for a Pro Tools rig, then Vangore is right, you might get better traffic in one of the other forums (the Equipment forum, for instance).

For $10k, you have 2 basic choices for Pro Tools, used or an LE system based on a Digi002, for instance. There are limitations with the LE system (only 32 tracks).

If you are looking for recommendations on setting up a studio room/environment, then we will need more details.

I hope this helps.
Darryl.....

Ddev, just hit him for a $2k consulting fee, and fax him a list of auralex foam and protool stuff to buy.

LMAO

I record rap, and believe me, you can do alot with 10 g's. If you wanna get a pro tools setup, then your gonna have to get the le version.

Heres a list of eveything I would get:
Digi 002 W/t pro tools
mic pre: Avalon Vt-737
mic: Rode NTk
Beat making software: Reason
sampler: roland Mv-8000
monitors: Krk v8
keyboard: korg triton

You'll need a pretty good computer too. AMD64 3400+ processors seem to be the best bang for buck right now.
You'll need 1gig RAM,
a couple fast (7200RPM, 8ms seek time, 8MB cache) and quiet harddrives, I recommend seagates.
You'll probably want to invest in some stuff that's designed for silence for the computer, ie. case, case fans, CPU cooler, Power supply.

Plan on spending about a grand on the computer alone if you build. up to double if you buy a turnkey DAW computer. READ AND RE-READ the digidesign site about compatibility. There's some really random stuff in there that could cause problems if you aren't careful.
Please let me know if anything is unclear.

Other suggestions:
Get the 002R and separate Control Surface (ie. Motor Mix), there are many units that cover the differences between 002 and 002R, for much less than the price difference between the two.
Couple of flatscreen monitors (or one big one)
Quality cables
More mics for versatility

You'll probably want to spend another grand just on acoustic treatment. Read some of the posts around here on exactly what.

I think you can do better than a Rode NTk, especially if you're pairing it with an Avalon! Soundelux U195 is where I'd go, or an AT 4060.

Buying a hardware sampler is sort of pointless now... use Kontakt or other software based sampler. Korg Triton is another waste of money--use softsynths or your software sampler. By avoiding this redundant hardware better done via softsynths (they are digital keyboards!) you can save a ton of money.

I'd get better monitors than the KRK's. Tannoy Reveal Actives maybe, or Genelec 1029 actives.

The one flaw with PT LE for rap is the lack of any real MIDI flexibility for creating sequences. I guess if you're use to it it's not a big deal.

Don't forget the computer (G5?) and plugins you'll need. The base plugs with a Digi002 are average... but for 10k you should be well above average in what you can pump out.

I agree with all the stuff on this list, except that the monitors are subjective to the listener. Overall, though, these are all fine choices that won't break the bank.
