Hey, I'm very new to the world of acoustic treatment...I have two conditions here... I want to avoid wasting money on pre-made bass traps and foam. I also want to avoid having to nail them into the walls... Would it be enough to just buy some Owens Corning 703, cover it in fabric and build some sort of stands for them or even just stand them on some flat surface or lean them against the walls? Thanks...

Yes. It would surely help. Rockwool is less expensive than 703, but not as rigid, so frames would have to be built. You could make superchunks out of rockwool and place a freestanding framed scrim in front of the trap.

Thanks Jimmy, will look into Rockwool, though 703 seems cheap enough for me.

Frames make them SO much more easy to deal with - you can move them, hang them, make them free standing.

Also makes it way easier to cover with fabric.

Can I get away without building frames or stands? Can I just cover them in fabric and lean them against the walls on a slight angle? Is fabric sufficient to safely cover the fiberglass?

You can get away with it yes, but you will not be using them to their full potential. May as well put them in frames so that you can use them in other ways in the future. :)

Can I get away with not building frames or stands? Can I just cover the 703's in fabric and lean them against the wall at a slight angle? Also, is fabric enough to safely cover the 703's or do I need extra material (what materials and fabrics do you guys recommend?). Thanks.

woops, sorry for the double post...... Is it easy to build the frames or do you know any ones pre-made that are relatively cheap?

Arcadeko has offered good prices for building them. Where do you live?

Shipping would probably kill the bargain. Arkadeko is in Atlanta I believe. He will be back around with some more advice soon. He is like the inexpensive trap guru these days. :)

How long would you say the whole project would take ( a one man job).....building about 10-15 traps?

The way I did mine, took probably 6hours total for 10. The plan for my next batch will be much less.

Arcadeko? Where are you Arcadeko? :D

Umm whats the question?

I really don't see how you would attach the fabric without a frame.

Suprstar came over a couple weeks ago and built 4 traps in about 3 hours. Of course that's using air-nailers and stuff in my garage which is set up as a workshop with all kinds of saws and crap. The things are so bulky it would be expensive to ship them I think, but I never actually went up to the UPS store to get a price.

I was going to sell some because I thought I would have a lot of panels left over, but I ended up with 1 24x48 and 4 15x48 pieces of Roxul - so not really enough to make much. I could make a pair of the 15x48x6" panels - they are a nice size for hanging or free staading - there is a pic around here somewhere in one of my threads.

Well if you want to give me a price, I'll definitely consider it. Let me know man, thanks.

Building the frames aren't really that difficult. There are plenty of videos online which shows how to do them. Places like Home Depot, or Lowes will cut those frame woods. You basically just have to decide on measurements, buy a hammer and small nails. Trust me, once you do one, you will see how easy it is. Buying a nail gun (a good basic one costs $20) would be helpful as well. Also, getting those 2X4's at Home Depot or Lowes cut according to your specifications would probably cost you less then getting them shipped in.

At the end of the day, you will get frames and more importantly the pleasure of building them with your own two hands. Just my 2c.
