I am about to build my first snake that will consist of 6-8 xlr inputs and 2 stereo returns. I'm looking to keep my cost down but don't won't to end up with a really bad quality snake either. I'm going to find some Switchcraft or Nuetrik connectors to buy from somewhere (haven't looked for good prices on this yet) and I'm looking at some Belden snake. Can someone please look at the following link and see if this is a good choice for my cable. It seems to be priced well and has 8 channels. Any other suggestions/ideas on anything here are welcome! Thx!

That cable should be fine. Make sure you check the cost of prebuilt snakes against your final parts cost. You are probably going to be looking at $150-200 in parts and shipping plus your own labor. You might be able to get a new one for around that.

Thanks TexRoadkill! Yes, I have seen some snakes for around $160 that have the right amount of connections. I've seen stuff by Hosa and companies that don't tell you what kind of cable or connections there using(like Marshall). It sounded kind of scary low quality stuff, but maybe not... I know Hosa is low quality. Anyone know anything about Marshall snakes? Heres one for $160: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2368329026&category=41461 Also, heres one from RMS for $190 http://www.activemusician.com/market/items/MC_RMS-9-100.asp

I'm not familliar with either of those. The Marshall looks nice. The RMS looks like it might have slightly lower quality connectors but it's hard to tell from a picture. If the Marshall really is spec'd for digital audio then that would be pretty good cable.

I'd just like to say, that buying cables is never fun! Building them can be slightly more rewarding, but just as expensive for quality.

It's much more fun to buy plug-ins or processors, or that steal of an old synth you found at the pawn shop.

Cables are boring. And we all know that we need the best, or all of that other stuff is worthless. :(

No fun at all!

Cheers guys.

Thanks for the replies! Still pretty tossed up on what to get but I'll probably still go with this Belden cable. I noticed there were some local dealers in my area on the Belden site. I'll probably talk to them on the subject as well and see if this snake will do what I want it to. The ProCo and Marshall (especially Marshall for the price) are very tempting. Would definitely save some time. But I think I can come in around the Marshall price if I build it myself and end up will a high quality cable that maybe I can sell later if needed. Thanks again for the input.
