Buffing out finish scratches

What's the best way to buff out surface scratches in the lacquer finish of an electric guitar? Is this something the average guitar playing handyman can handle?

Is it nitro laquer like a Gibson or poly like a Fender? You work them differently, but in the end it's alot like buffing the finish on a car.

You can do it with guitar polishing compounds. The most common ones are the Maguire’s compounds, but the best are made by 3M. Professionals use buffing wheels, but they are expensive, and you can ruin your guitar if you don't know what you are doing. You can either burn through the finish, or you can catch on the wheel and send the guitar flying into the wall at far too high a speed. Doing it by hand is not quite as effective, but you can get results which are close. It just takes a lot longer. If you get the Maguire’s compounds, just follow the directions, but do it by hand. You can also use a buffing pad on a drill press, but I would not recommend it.
