buffer settings?

okay, so i've had it with having super choppy audio whenever i'm running a decent amount of rt effects or when i have more than say 15 tracks.

i've heard that the key to fixing stuff like this can be the buffer settings.

how exactly should i change these to try to fix such problems?

also, it only gets really choppy when theres less stuff going on (blank spots in tracks with no wavedata). so like, its totally smooth when the horn section is playing (4-5 tracks of audio), but when they stop everything goes nuts.

anyone encountered anything like this?

hmmm. i just thought of something.

if i bounce all my audio to clips so that there is "wavedata" all the way through my songs it might speed things up, since that seems to be the problem.

is this a good idea or am i crazy?

What audio card and what drivers are you using?

Increasing the buffers might help, but it will increase your latency. This may or may not be a problem for you. Are you using input monitoring, or recording realtime midi?

i'm using an sblive with xp drivers.


not doing any input monitoring or midi stuff.

i guess the best thing would be to apply some of the audio effects.. but i'd like to avoid doing anything destructive if i can.

In that case, go ahead and increase your latency settings.

Go to Options > Audio and look at the section called Mixing Latency. You can increase either the buffer size (by sliding the bar to the right) or you can increase the number of buffers. I assume it's currently at the default of 2 buffers. First try raising it to three. If that doesn't do it, try moving the slider all the way to the right.

That should help some.
