Budget studio creation

I'm planning on putting together as nice sounding a setup as I can for about $1500. So I know I posted about my current thoughts in the Newbie section, but if that's all you had to spend and you currently had 2 Shure SM57 mics and a PC, what would you buy?
 
What do you have for a sound-card and what S/W are you using.
Also what style of music?
 
I'd like it to be able to handle solo singer/songwriter stuff, as well as a full band. The soundcard on the machine is useless, and I currently have Tracktion 2 and Cakewalk (but I know that a lot of equipment comes with other software).

I've been around awhile, but STILL this helped me get a better feel for some
of the other (newer) options that are out there.
 
No offense but I found the tweakheadz site to be nothing more than one big advertisement. Even his posts on the bbs were practically ads...YMMV
