Budget Setup

Hi. Basically just trying to get a decent recording setup for the price. Heres what im thinking so far:

Echo AudioFire 8
KRK Rokit G2 8's
Shure SM7b
Akai MPK-49

Yea so thats pretty much it just looking for suggestions for anything better in quality for the money. Thats what im going for thanks.

Thats a nice little setup that'll get you started for sure.. Not a lot of mic pre's on that interface tho, if u wanna hook up more mics you might wanna consider a firestudio or something.

is there anything you would suggest other than the audiofire 8? anything better in the same price range? besides the duet bc im using a pc :/

Well, depends what you need, but presonus firestudiois a highly regarded interface

okay basically i just need to do vox but want the coverters/preamp i can get for around 300-600. Ive been researching and see the converter chips in the audiofire 2,4,8pre, and 12 are the same as the rme fireface 400. So would the echo auidofire 4 be best in sound qaulity for that price range?

I'll say what I always say:

Spend most of your money on monitors first. Get a $100 mic, use the sound card you already have, and go for much better monitors. Learn with that and save up for later.

I agree with this if you want to do it properly but maybe not the best way to get enthusiastic as it is slightly limiting (not saying its wrong just speaking from my perspective its very sensible advice I'm just not a very sensible person when I buy gear). The way I did it was to buy quantity over quality so I have huge amounts of possibility and a steep learning curve. Suddenly going from no desk to a 10 mic preamp desk with Aux's, sub's, direct outs etc... Then as my experience increased I upgraded certain components of my set up (mics first) but I learnt so much and got so many jobs having a big desk I would never say I wasted any money and the great thing was I was able to get straight out there with loads of gear and do it! Instead of listening to monitors for years before I could afford any other gear... Its all very subjective and its important you do what YOU want to do! It sounds like you've done your research and I have heard great things about all the gear your going to buy, maybe look out for some of the underpriced chinese mics coming out that are way better than you might think, you'll find you can get something so good for cheaper than a brand mic (do lots and lots of research and be prepared for returns) T.Bone SCT800 tube mic has great feedback people saying they've replaced their Neumenns thomann.. Other than that Rockets are always suggested as a good starting point over Alesis or Behringer..

I wish Id spent more on monitors...but I know of at least one successful producer that uses an old "favourite" set of tannoys...he just got used to how they sounded over the years..

also things like mics etc are so subjective...how can anyone say whats a good mic for a stranger on the internet...we can only say what experiences we've had with our set ups which may have no benifit at all to someone with a completely different voice


I read an article recently on how music recording forums should be shut down as all they do is generate opinions on equipment and techniques that punters should be trying themselves..it was light hearted but the message was pretty true...just delv in there and try things out whenever and wherever possible..

True, oh so true.
A go to microphone (like my SM7b) that gets used 70% of the time, but that other 30% is divided between several other mics.
Only shows that diversity is the way to go..... unless you purchase say a U87 right off the bat, but who has that kind of money at the start up? and still you won't be using only that microphone all the time.

Its just my opinion. I find it interesting the different aproaches people can have to buying gear and neither one is right or wrong. I believe that if researched properly you can get something as good as a U87 for a third of the price either by modding a mic with a good capsule, or buying one that sounds good enough already fo a bit more.. Some of the high end ADK or SE mics or possibly more obscure brands say £500 instead or £1500-2000. As I said its very subjective and I know its hard to recommend mics online...
