Ok I'm a poor sob....so with that said should I get m-audio av40's, samson mediaone 4a or should I just get some decent headphones like the audio technica ath-m40fs?

Instead, I would suggest going with a pair of ATHM50s instead of the 40s. The 50s are a huge step above the 40s, and using headphones means your room won't be influencing the tunes as much. Eventually you'd want to get real monitors, but I see no point in spending 50% the price for monitors that only get you 10% of the way there.

You should try to get the best possible with your budget. Push it, my friend if you can. The quality of your monitors is #2 in your 'listening chain' - Being an acoustician, I count it backwards from #1= Room, #2= Monitors, and #3= Electronics/converters.
