Great price.. .snatch it up... pop open the hood and see if it has Jensen transformers in it. If so, you got a REAL good deal. Change the op-amps, dont even think about it. Use the opa627ap or opa627bp.

By the way... I've been hearing more and more about the Radius 40 and how good it sounds from some pretty well knowns... might be worth checking out.
Since Cyan and Bruce have all the money these days, I vote them in on the hearing test :)

I have checked this link before and listened to the sound files extensively. but as i cannot hear the source live in order to compare it with the resulting recording (as a matter of fact) the soundfiles are rather useless. it would be interesting to know if someone has made some real life experiences with this mod...I need the mic pre as clean and uncoloured as possible, well, and I cannot afford a great river (not yet).
 
The Analog Devices opamp is the more transparent mod, whereas the Burr is more Class-A sounding. I prefer a colored pre on most stuff.
For $300, well... its hard to beat. I saw a brand new Spirit Folio F1 online a little bit ago for like $200. Forgot the link though. THey had an oversupply of them. 6 "better than Mackie" pres for $200 something... pretty fat deal...

have you ever listened to a spirit mixer at full gain?

Never heard the Spirit, and I was just quoting what I've heard.
THe analog devices number is different, cant remember it. I would choose the Burrs 1st, but thats me.
 
got it...

I bought it, unfortunately it is one of the first units without jensen tranformers, the manual still states that it has them, but opening it i found the generic transformers inside.
I did some first testing, not very seriously yet, but the first impression i got from comparing it with my ultragain 2200 (one mc012 of a matched pair going to the behringer, the other to the mp20) is that the diferences are very very subtle. The Behringer goes for 180 USD new...
tomorrow I want to test it in a friends studio against his TLA (dont know the model yet) on various sources.
