Okay, now that I got your attention... :D

First here's my setup: Studio Projects C-1 through VTB-1 through a RNC.

I record rap and here's my problem: I recorded several people lately and the C-1 always worked with the voice of the rappers I was recording... I recorded black & white rappers... It sounded best on black rappers but sounded good on white ones too... Now I record myself and I think this microphone is just not made for my voice... I have a naturally loud and clear voice but the C-1 being so bright makes my voice sound too clear and not hmmmm... how could I say it? Old or vintage sounding enough... I don't know if you get me here but anywayz... I was wondering if someone would happen to have the same type of voice I have and could suggest me microphone that would work better for me considering my setup and a budget of 1000$ CAN max (That would be about 640$ US...)

Thanks in advance,
Beathoven

now....explain to me how skin color can determine how someones voice sounds.
Then maybe I can help out.

As racist as it may seem, I think I know what he means. Can't you normally tell wether someone is black or white when listening to a recording? At least between male rappers? Eminem is a badass, but you don't have to see him to know he's white! Or could you imagine a white guy with Busta Rhymes voice? No... I don't think so...

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you about the mic... Smoke more maybe? :)

Do you have a SM57?? If you have a dynamic give it a try, it should have less hyped highs. Don't use a beta 57 though. While those ARE good mics, to me they seem to have an exagerated high end. I think Beta57's are better suited to snares and toms. Maybe a guitar cab too.

Anyway, if you don't have at least one SM57 you should get one.

jonkan: read subtractor's answer, this is exactly what I would have answered you.

Beezoboy: I have a SM58 and I think my voice sounded better on it than on my C-1...

I still think I need another condenser microphone... Anyone knows which microphone Eminem is using to record? (Probably out of my price range but just to know...)

Peace,

Its not racist at all. There is a culturally induced differance in the way the people speak that carries over into singing. While not technically correct to refer to it as people of a particular race sing a certain way, its easier than saying people of particular population, the mojority of whom have higher levels of melanin in their skin regardless of the fact that they may or may not share comon ancestry sing a certain way, but only some of them.

Anastacia sounds pretty 'black' to me...

But yeah, when it comes to comparing Isaac Hayes/Barry White with Axl Rose/Barry Gibb, you get the idea of how black people sound, eh? :D

I think to emphasize a 'black' vocal's deep end, you might want to try a Sennheiser MD-421 or an ElectroVoice RE-20. These both have 'meaty' lows... usually used for radio voice-overs with that big fat sound. But the C1 is said to have some thick low-end as well. I heard that on several clips. Sounds like a slight boost around 100-200Hz...

Yea, I think he's using a Behringer. :D

You know, Harvey had Vanilla Ice in his studio not too long ago (and he's kind of the same thing as Eminem, right?), so he might have some advice for you.

I think what you want is either a dynamic like an SM7 or an Electrovoice RE20 . . . or you may be looking for a condenser with less hype in the highs; ie - Shure KSM32 or Blue Baby Bottle.

I can't even begin to guess who's butt that is in your avatar now, Speedy!

I believe he uses the Sony C-800...or watever it is...

As a matter of fact, He records here were I work from time to time, so I just asked the engineer this morning because of this thread. He said Sony C-800.

They have a ton of mics here so he was a little miffed that they had to go spend $4000 on another mic, but what do you do when Dr. Dre says you must have one? I guess you go and buy one.

Blessings, Terry

If I was Harvey, I wouldn't want it known that I had Vanilla Lice in MY studio!!;)

It wouldn't help anyway, Ice, as his close friends call him, is apparently rap-rock now. I think he yells alot. I could be wrong.

I just don't get the Britney Spears thing. I mean, I know beauty is subjective, but just because the music and soda pop industries tell us that someone is gorgeous, does that automatically make them so?

In the universe of beautiful women, Britney Spears is fairly average. Not butt-ugly, certainly, but compared to a Catherine Zeta-Jones, a Vivica Fox, a Denise Richards, etc...? I'm sorry, but it's not even close! (I'd throw in Sophia Loren and Raquel Welch, but then I'd really be showing my age...)

Well said, LD. And for a more extreme example? Christina "Butt Ugly" Aguilera. Jeez, look up, guys. Look up about 8 inches... there... see that? Butt ugly.

Take a look at the Dec. 9 issue of "Time". See the pic of Shania "miss average" Twain in the upper right? Jeez. That just ain't pretty. She looks sick.

Now, Faith Hill is a different story. Flawless.

(oops... all O.T. :D)

PS: mics are great

I second the "Meek" nomination.
If you're really a tweakaholic, the original SC-2 would be bitchin,
and should run around $600 US, or its sibling, the SC 2.2. for a bit
less.
Otherwise, you can get good results from the Joe Meek MC2,
its baby brother. The opto-compression gives vocals a "tube-like"
effect (don't you love those descriptions!).
And I even have one too.

Chris

P.S. I think Shakira looks good, but maybe I'm just getting too
old to judge!

Good looks, dumb name.

I'm sure it's a fake name anyway.

BTW, who in the hell names their kid Beyonce????

Beathoven,
I curious about your audio chain. Why don't you just plug the RNC1773 into the insert on the SP VTB-1 or is that what your doing?
