I walk the line
What mics do you think go well with a Brick, and what don't.

I know, should be in the mic forum, but since this is really about the Brick...

Male 'classic rock' vocals.

What mics do you have? Are you looking for new mics? If so, what is your budget?

OK, here's the deal

I'm trying to justify buying a Brick. I want it as a bass DI, but I can't justify the $ just for that. The next thing on my list was going to be an sm-7, before the Brick thing came along. I guess that wouldn't be such a good combo because of the relatively low gain of the Brick (thanks, Chessrock!), but I was wondering if there was a mic or mics that worked particularly well with one. I would perhaps reconsider. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that what I want it is a good dynamic, which would probably leave out the Brick as a pre.

Just exploring my options.

For vocals with a dynamic or ribbon, it's probably not the best choice. Although, I've used it with an EV RE20 and a couple of cheap chinese ribbons. The sound was good, but I had to boost the signal in the software to get it loud enough in the mix. For guitar amps or drums, it works great with dynamics/ribbons and gain is not an issue.

I've found that the brick smooths out some of the harshness in cheap condensers (Rode NT1, Apex 460) and it is my primary vocal preamp for those mics.

It is a kickass DI.

Well, it's gone now

but another one will come along.

I don't know anything about the Apex, but the NT1 is bright, so do you think it would still work well with a v67? It has a rep as being dark, but I don't see it.

I've never used one, but from the recordings I've heard with it, I don't think I would call it dark -- more midrangey, but not dark.

Sure about that? At that price range you are getting an excellent Bass DI as well as a good mic pre ...

Maybe not great for all your mic needs but good for many ... and like the posters above stated, as long as you are not looking to drive primarily ribbon mics, it's no brainer IMHO

I put off buying it for a year because it wasnt rack mountable ... go figure!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I can't justify $300 for a bass DI right now. If it was a bass DI and a kickass pre for the mic I want, that might be a different story.
