brand new to recording, but not to songwriteing

This thread is awesome. It should probably be in The Mic Forum, though.

This dude drove 1,300 miles to settle a BBS feud. You guys could burn each other's houses down like 5,000 times in the time it took Russell Tavares to get to Texas.

I kind of like the excruciating detail

It means I can make shorter posts and still be associated with an informative thread :)

Posting MP3s
There are several questions you asked in that one question, therefore requiring several answers. So you’ll excuse me if this post to finish up your inquisition is more than 5 words long. And since I’m doing you the courtesy of answering your questions, do me the courtesy of actually reading my answers, even if they are long.

First, I HAVE in the past posted three different MP3s as a response to a hostile challenge such as yours. Your claim that I have never done so is false.

From doing that, I also learned there is zero percentage for one in doing so, for no matter what MP3s one posts in response to such a challenge, the hostile adversary such as you will not be honest in their reply. It’s a trap set up simply to allow them to say, “Wow, that sucked because of so-and-so”, regardless of any intrinsic value one way or another.

This was proved recently when someone else posted an MP3 in response to such a challenge. They got a very lengthy and mostly negative review and comments regarding problems with their technique and quality of their gear. The person who posted the MP3 then sprung their reverse trap by truthfully identifying the MP3 as actually being a commercial recording made in a world-class studio by well-known and respected engineers and musicians.

That was a lovely card he played, one that I was holding in my hand for a while myself, but he beat me to the chance to play it. I had lined up a couple of examples of commercial recordings made in quality studios by seasoned musicians and brand-name engineers, but would have been heard or recognized only by those few folks who had a quite deep encyclopedic knowledge of the total pool of recorded music out there. These recordings had a sound to them that for various reasons I knew would get ripped to shreds on this board, especially if the reviewers thought that they were no-name recordings. If the Big Boys don’t stand a chance, what chance do I?

So, why do I not post MP3s voluntarily, to a friendlier audience? There’s no point to it. One posts their recordings here for one of three reasons: to seek advice, to boast or display pride, or to advertise.

If/when I need advice on my work, I’ll seek it. But frankly, after close to 30 years of doing this stuff, my ears and my experience are my best advice. If I need some fresh ears to check some refined quality of my mix, I’ll bring in some trusted ears from someone who I’ve known for 20-30 years who I know have both the ears and the experience to either match or beat mine, to listen to and critique the real, uncompressed thing, not post a compressed MP3 to a bunch of strangers of varying expertise and ear quality to tell me that they don’t like my guitar tone because it’s not the direction they would go with it if they had their druthers.

(This is also, BTW, a big reason why I don’t frequent the MP3 clinic to give such advice either, and the few times that I do such critiques on other forums it’s usually in response to a specific question regarding a how-to on the mix.)

And, despite your personal (and wrong) opinion of my motivations for being here, I am well past the point in my life of needing to boast about anything, and my pride comes with the response that my clients and I get from the results of my work. Advertise? I don’t have a band of my own, and other than playing some blues harp accompaniment, I am not a musician myself, so I have no need to advertise the music. As far as advertising my engineering, hell, you are already climbing up my ass for my signature advertising my position; just imagine the hell you’d rain down on me if I took it further and included evem more links.

Finally on that topic, most of the musicians I do work with these days are older, more seasoned people who have no desire in becoming famous rock-and-roll stars, already have a solid positive reputation in this hood, and are happy earning income from playing with 2 or 3 or more bands. Those that are interested in recording take that interest one of two ways; either they have me mix their tracks which either they record themselves or with my assistance, just as part of their exploration into new composition and arrangement ideas which, if they do anything with them at all, they’ll later take to a Big Boy studio instead of f**king around with home recording, or they’ll be musicians who are already “almost famous” (Gordon Patriarca [bassist that played with Spirit, The Meters, The Remainders, and is currently music director for the Paul Green School of Rock on which the movie is based], his brother, Jim [guitarist, American English, Duke Tomato, American Slang, and more bands over the years than I can even remember, let alone count), Lisa McClowery [vocalist, “Beauty and the Beast” soundtrack], Jerry Frank [road drummer for Stevie Wonder, John Hiatt, and studio and session drummer on literally hundreds of commercial recordings], etc.) and have already recorded under contract for commercial labels, and have long since passed any interest in the amateur indie recording scene.

As such, I don’t have a whole lot of MP3s to actually share with this board. The stuff I did in the 80s was mostly to ¼” or ½” tape which, even if I did still have my open reel decks, have turned to rust long before they could be transcribed to computer. As far as the 90s go, most of my work then was in A/V recording and editing and in working as an engineer for a company that designed the hardware and software that did that stuff. You want to hear/see samples of my work back then? Go back to the mid-late 90s and check out the program promos for superstation WGN-TV, the TV commercials for Bass Pro Shops, commercials and trailers for The Muppet shows and Muppet movies (Jim Henson Productions), and the work I supported in some of the special visual and audio effects used in the movies “Forrest Gump” and “ID4:Independence Day". I’m not saying that I worked on those two movies directly, but as an engineer for the companies (D-Vision Systems & Discreet Logic) whose gear was purched for and used for such work on those movies, I did provide technical and procedural assistance to the actual people who do.

So sue me if I don’t fit the mold of your average home recordist who spends his time recording and wide-panning high school headbanger hair bands with meSpace streams or SoundClick downloads for everybody to hear. Sue me, but don’t f**king take to harassing my *every* move on this forum and defaming my character in the process because of it, because the gloves are off in that ring, Keith. Enough is enough.

Self-perception
How do I and my clients feel about my own work and capabilities? I’m good at what I do. If I wasn’t I’d do something else until I did find what I was good at.

The clients I’ve worked for and the associates I have worked with have been very happy with my work, and I have often been very well rewarded for it. I have never gone backwards in my career and have more than once moved forward faster than I expected.

I do not think of myself as God’s gift to earth, nor do I pass judgments from on high on others in this field the way you do.

But I have very well-trained engineer ears, a rather broad and deep appreciation and education in commercial artists and recordings (I’m not limited to “both kinds of music”, and have moved way past the Top500 before most people on this board were born.) Put those together with good analytical skills, a decent intellect, a creative love of music, and almost 30 years of experience pursuing and practicing putting all that together and yeah, I think I can hold my own in a home recording forum.

Bullshit detection
OK, Keith, let’s talk about bullshit detectors. When my detector scans someone who makes a living in public relations/marketing, it scans someone who’s full-time job is to create big steaming piles of bullshit.

When my detector scans someone who works in marketing, and yet hides his home studio business website in an obscure corner of the web and won’t even plug it with a simple hyperlink on the very forum dealing with home studios, and who hides behind a false persona deliberately designed to actually piss people off and turn them away, my sensor goes wild over the disconnect between someone who gets paid to advertise and put a best face forward, yet intentionally hides his own endeavors and then acts like an asshole on purpose on top of it. Something there reeks of bovine excrement.

And when someone calls “bullshit” on me, because they think I answer too many questions honestly, with too much detail (why the hell would a bullshitter go into so much detail that he could get called on?), and with answers that are “too long”, but in well over 4,000 posts over more than two years, has only called me on the QUALITY OF THE ACTUAL CONTENT of my posts a number of times that could be counted on one hand, my detector finds bullshit, but not in where you say it is. Sure a few of those times I have made a mistake or been corrected on something that I had wrong. I’m human, and I certainly don’t take myself as perfect. But even 10 times out of well over 4000 posts is a track record I’m not ashamed of.

The bullshit is in your use of the term bullshit, Keith. The real truth is you simply don’t like my style; you simply don’t like me. And that’s fine. I could give a rat’s ass about that; in fact, that I bother the likes of you so much could mean that I'm doing something right. You’re not seeing bullshit Keith, you just WANT to see bullshit from me so badly that you’re seeing it in forms as stupid as “I make too many posts” (you make as many as I do), “my posts are too long” (for who, someone with dyslexia?), and “I give too much detail in my answers” (as opposed to what? Not enough detail?).

That’s not bullshit, Keith. That’s simply a posting style you don’t like.

Now, are you going to accept the quid pro quo I offered, Keith, and back off, or are we both going to continue down the path you started to a destination no one wants?

Use the search function, idiot.

Searching through your posts would be like going to the library of congress. I have a day job, unfortunately.

tHE CAPS ARE NOT HOLLERING; THEY'RE JUST TO DISTINGUISH NY QUESTIONS FROM MY ANSWERS.

Thanks for clarifying. :D

This is the last delay you get.

I'll keep that in mind. Is this like in Tom Delay by chance?

1) What are you doing on these boards, and what is your purpose?
A)SAME QUESTION BACK AT YOU.

To torture as many people as possible. :D To call people out on their bullshit ... and to keep help keep this place clean from phony bolgognies who are here for purposes (agendas) other than to talk about recording and to share good info.

.. Oh yea, and to talk about recording with the few people here who aren't complete morons on the subject.

... And if it happens to send some business my way, that's gravy on the potatoes (though, frankly, that doesn't happen often.).

And this is why you're on my list of phonies, and a target of my torture. :D

It isn't clear to anyone just what kind of "business" you'd get ... as it's very unclear as to what you even do. Your business title is vague and puzzling. I do a Google search on the name of your company and ... nothing even remotely useful comes up.

Which is even more puzzling ... because one would think that someone as apparently intelligent as yourself ... would be able to put together a coherent branding image, with plenty of visibility / searchability, and that an impressive and easily viewed, coherent bio on yourself would be only a few search terms away, etc.

It just doesn't add up. And I don't trust the intentions of someone who's intentions are so ambiguous.

C) WHY DO A DOZEN OTHER REGULARS HERE DO THE SAME THING, OFTEN INCLUDING LOGOS AND LINKS TO SITES THAT ARE A LOT MORE ADVERTISING THAN THEY ARE INFORMATIONAL, YET YOU DON'T SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEM DOING IT? WHY DON'T YOU RAG ON TOM OR JOHN OR ANY OF THE REST FOR DOING SO?

Because I have a perfectly good handle on EXACTLY why they're here.

It's obvious to a duck. They're Mastering guys. There's a ripe base of impressionable home recordists who actually think they might need the services of either one of these guys. :D A whole 'nother subject of debate, but at least we know who they are ... we know why they're here. I can go to their site and learn all about them, and listen to examples of their work, etc.

Whether or not I agree with their presence ... we know why they're here, and they carry themselves like good citizens.

D) WHY DO YOU FEEL THE NEED TO TAKE ON A SUPPOSEDLY FAKE PERSONA SO YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH COMING ON HERE AND ACTING LIKE THE OFFICIAL FORUM ASSHOLE?

Because I tell people what they NEED to hear, rather than what they WANT to here. And sometimes that can make you a very unpopular / hated person. :D

Secondly, I have nothing to advertise or brand. I keep it real and focus on the discussions. I'm not here to brand myself or to further any other agendas ... so it would be kind of hipocrytical of me to go around self-promoting.

BTW, take a look at the stats before you throw stones. Your average number posts per day are only a small hair below mine.

That doesn't take word count in to effect. Throw that in to the equation, and it's staggering how much work you're doing.

Now I don't generally fashion myself as much of a detective ... but it raises some red flags. I spend more time here than I should. :D I'm aware of that. And I type and think very fast. Now to think that someone else would make as many posts as I do ... and on average have them be at least 3-5 times the average length (I'm guessing)

... I just don't see it as being healthy. And you don't seem like an "unhealthy" person, so something isn't adding up. This guy (Southside) is here for a reason. There's a burning aspiration going on here, and this board is serving a purpose, and plays a role in this aspiration ... but it's completely unclear as to what that purpose is. SO I DON'T TRUST THE GUY. And yes, I'm using all-caps for emphasis. :D

Then the second thing happened. The response I got to to that offering - as well as the subsequent frequency chart - was quite overwhelming and entirely positive. The requests for links, e-mails, PMs ... I like writing, I like teaching ...

Alright, so we're getting somewhere. But still, there's more questions it raises than it answers.

The fact that you spend so much of your time teaching ... and you have no problem sharing that kind of info as downloads ... yet, at the same time you have no actual body of audio work to share.

Again, it doesn't add up. Here's a guy with what appears to be plenty of technical know-how ... yet posting MP3's continues to post a challenge for him ? ? ?

To make things even more confusing ... these articles or whatever are offered as downloads? Like a zip file that has to be somehow "installed?" Holy crap. I'm thinking: Has this guy (Southside) figured out how to publish a web page yet? Does he seriously want me to download and unzip a strange file when I don't have a clue as to who he is or why he's even here?

GET... REAL. I mean seriously Southside or whoever the fuck you are. What kind of fucking idiots do you take people for? I'm not touching your fucking zip file with a ten-foot pole.

Again, your purpose in life makes zero sense. Here's a guy who can explain, in excruciating detail, the intricacies of computing mutiband compression ratios using the slope of the knee; i.e. rise over run ... yet publishing a freakin' web page is something he hasn't yet wrapped his head around?

Now let's pretend for argument's sake that these zip files are completely safe and that you just don't choose to post this stuff the traditional way. Now assuming your goal is to make somewhat of a name for yourself (the understatement of the century) and to brand yourself as some sort of an "expert" and generate a buzz on the web (am I getting warmer?) ... why on earth would someone make themselves look like a complete idiot when it comes to marketing themselves?

How on earth am I supposed to trust the audio know-how of someone who makes no attempt at competently marketing themselves as anything but a complete ludite who doesn't understand the web?

Again, my only logical conclusion is that ... either your some sort of savant ... or there's a bigger picture in all of this. And "branding" yourself as an audio expert is merely phase one of a much grander marketing plan you've got worked out in your head; one that will ultimately involve the sale / publish of books and/or tutorials on recording for profit.

In which case ... I would trust you much more if this intention was clearly put forth. Until you clearly state this intention, then I don't trust you.

OK, I ran out of time for tonight, I gotta get ready for that gig tonight that you decided not to buy me a beer at :).

That's alright, because I had to be at Lincoln Park Zoo last night (if that gives you any indication of the kind of folks I'm running with these days - some more google homework for you there, Glenny).

I'm heading down to the lake for Venetian Night.

At least we have that in common.

You know what I look like already (except my sideburns are longer now); if you go down there and see me, come over and say hi.

I have no idea what you look like. You don't happen to play any bass, do ya? If so, then that would explain plenty ! :D But again, you're really starting to creep me out with some of this stuff. Yup, you're a stalker.

CLIFFNOTES VERSION

Chessrock's question to Southside:

"Why do you publically list your name, professional title, and the name of some sort of media company within your sig? What do you hope to accomplish by this?

Southside's Response: I don't look to accomplish much of anything by it. It identifies who is giving the answer and helps the reader judge who is giving the answer. And if it happens to send some business my way, that's gravy on the potatoes (though, frankly, that doesn't happen often.).

Cliffnotes summary: Chessrock thinks Southside is a phony, who is using the board to brand himself as an "expert in audio" ... and that he's doing it for the benefit of what he hopes to be a profitable endeavor; i.e. audio tutorials, books, etc. in the future.

Suspicous of Southside for not making intentions clear.

Southside thinks chessrock is a deranged asshole.

An observation by someone who is not following the days of your lives:

- SSGlen's posts appear helpful, ulterior motive or not.
- CR doesn't appear to be a deranged asshole. *Disclaimer: I am a deranged asshole, so my judgement MAY be flawed.
- You guys should just get a room and make out for a couple of hours. The sexual tension is as thick as mud.

An observation by me.....
Some of you are loonier than the drunk British characters in the cave, speaking of Moonpies and gobbledegook.....

It is unusual for someone who posts a lot to not have any music files around to hear. But since Glen's posts are, as a rule, good in content despite being wordy, why keep attacking?

Note to self - or, things to learn from this thread:
Be brief.

Don't piss off anyone from Chicago.

OK, Mr. Ricker, you had your opportunity to make things right. You decided to pass it up. What a shame.

Strike three.

So help me out here guys, whats the bare minimum i can get away with for a decent demo?

im thinking: a double miked acoustic gutiar with vocal tracks recorded sepperate? would a single mike on the guitar do well enough?

thanks in addvance,

i would record the vocals separate so the mics don't pick up the guitar it would screw your mixing and throw a condenser mic on the acoustic it will be fine

Sweet! Now I know chessrock's real name!

Now I can do absolutely nothing with it anyway.

I love these long bbs fights - I just hope there are no homes burned to the ground when all is said and done :(

Having gotten as well as agreed with information provided by both of you on a fair bit of occassions, I can't really comment either way. Chess does have an abbrasive edge to many of his responses, whereas South just goes into detail on many occassions. Not sure why that's a bad thing - especially since he has never posted or PMed me saying "hey - buy this book to find out more!"

Continue fighting, sorry for the interuption :p

Aren't you glad after your first post on this bbs, that the gloves came off and filled the damn page?

I would be inclined to agree that a decent mic, a decent open space, and a good pre/interface would do just fine for what you want to do.

A condenser of some kind would also do good if you want to just plunk down in front of a single mic and record your material.

I've done that with my Rode K2 and an M-Audio DMP-3 before and gotten what I consider to be passable if not good results.

Personally I've had nothing but good advice from Southside in the past, and it's all held up against further independent research. So all this phoney and bullshit detector stuff is just nonsense.

Ah - but what about all that SouthSIDEGlen merchandise he hoodwinked you into buying? Hmmmm? Total scam artist :D

I have no problem with the advice. It's the intentions that irk me. It's clearly for purposes of self-promotion. In due time, when his Independent Recording Network - or whatever it is - is fully operational and ready to hit the ground ... he'll have his own little convenient built-in following. I just wish this board could be viewed more as a discussion community ... and less of a self-serving opportunity to further one'e ends.

Either way ... I'm done with it. I've put Glenny on ignore. The only one I've ever done that to in my 6 years or so of frequenting this board. I've said my peace, and if the guy clearly makes my blood boil so much, then why even read the guy's long-winded self promoting blitherings?

That's exactly what's so ridiculous about Keith "chessrock" Ricker's allegations.

I have never solicited or sold anything here in my life. In fact anyone who has come to know me on this board over the past couple of years knows my disdain for salesmanship.

The one and only time I DID get business from being a member here was a mixing job for some Russian hip hop act (yes, you read it right :D ), which wound up to be a stillbirth because the band couldn't get their shit together and agree on anything. The punch line? Keith was actively vying for that same gig, trying to solicit for the money himself. Don't believe me? Search for it.

If I was here trolling for business, you really think I'd stick around for as long as I have without actively soliciting for it and with only one stinking project falling into my lap?

I'd also like to hear a definition of "phoney" that fits me, or better yet, doesn't fit Keith. I give good, solid information based upon years of both amateur and professional experience to those who ask for it, ask for nothing in return, and do so without hiding behind any anonymous or fake online persona.

I have made a full career out of the marriage of digital computer technology and A/V production technology, both on the development side as an engineer for those companies I listed, and on the production side as a prosumer-level A/V project studio (I never claimed any more); as opposed to Keith, who's career job is one of sales and marketing unrelated to the topics on this board and who's equally unimpressive setup in his loft apartment/condo is part time, if that.

He (until now) sits behind an anonymous persona treating newbs and regulars alike with utter contempt; the newbs because he acts like anyone who asks a question must be an idiot. In his on-line world, there are only stupid questions. The experienced he leaves alone for the most part, unless it's someone who actually spends as much time here as he does himself. At which point he stalks and harasses them for being too goody-goody to actually want to answer questions and share knowledge.

I am slowly building a website that will be dedicated to high signal-low noise knowledge sharing regarding this racket. Of that I have made no secret; hell it's right in my sig line some 5000 times on this BBS. Mr. Ricker thinks he's stumbled upon some great secret there . Yes, I will eventually be hoping to make some advertising revenue from that site; this stuff costs in time and money.

Keith sure doen not seem to have a problem with Dragon using the same model to support this very BBS that Keith has posted to over 10,000 times without giving Dragon a penny for it, and without providing any content that would actually be an advantageous draw to this site for Dragon. Yet the very idea that I might throw a Google ad or two on my website eventually (I haven't yet) just seems to make Keith's blood boil, and somehow makes me a phoney.

The fact is that throughout my career, I have had several opportunitites to take a training or teaching role. I used to train people in everything from computer network management to audio/video editing techniques, both in classroom-type environments and in the writing of training and operation manuals. I found that I was very good at it (at least that's what my supervisors and students told me), and that I actually enjoyed doing it.

There comes a time on some folk's careers where they spend less time on the playing field and more time coaching by the bench. I'm nearing that point now. With this music production industry turning independent, and with more and more sophisticated technology getting into the hands of rookies who don't know what to do with it, there is a real need for experienced folk to step in and hand over the reigns *and the information as to how to use them properly* to the next generation.

I know audio, I have the experience, and I'm good at it. I do not have the Pedrigee of a Fletcher or a Harvey Gerst, nor have I ever claimed to. But my knowledge base and my experience are solid, my writing and teaching skills are at least adequate, and I truely enjoy combining the two.

Will someone other than Keith please tell me what is so goddamned wrong or phoney about that?

G.
