There are a number of options you can use without spending a lot of money. First as already mentioned you can download Audacity for free, it's a good basic multi track recording program with the basic features you will need to get a good idea of how digital recording works. If you have a cassette recorder sitting around, you can use it as a stereo preamp, just connect the cassette deck's line outs to the computer's line in, you will need a rca to mini jack cable (about $5) and a couple of deacent mics, no need to spend a fortune yet but don't go for the $10 things from Walmart. Set up the cassette deck as if you were just using it and set the rec level on the pc so it does not "red line" and record a track. Add tracks untill you get what you want, mix, add effects whatever you want, transfer the file to jukebox and burn it to cd. Chances are it wont be a studio quality master but this method is inexpensive and will give you the chance to learn how digital recording works before spending big bucks on better gear. You might even surprise yourself and get a fairly good sounding recording for a minimal investment. Good luck and welcome aboard.
