br8 demos?

Hey Daveyo... I have two sites up that were recorded entirely in my bedroom studio on the BR-8.

I really liked your mp3's done on the BR-8! I am a big fan of girl bands from the 80's so the merrycherry songs are great.

Anyways, what I wanted to know is how you master from the BR-8. Is everything recorded (8 tracks) in the BR-8 then recorded to wave to mp-3 or are you adding things as you mix down from the BR-8? Do you use the optical digital out or just analogue? The reason I am asking is that the mix is really good (definetly the vocals) and I have a BR-8 and would like to get similar mixes.

Please let us know and thanks for the links!

Phil G! Thanks for comments.. it's very nice to know what I'm doing is actually working. (I mean sure, it sounds good to me when I record and mix it, but what does a total stranger think?) Anyway, thanks!

The route from the BR-8 to an MP3 is a long and probably "incorrect" way to do things.. but hey, all that matters is the end result, so here goes.

Everything was recorded onto the BR-8. All the effects you hear were either from the Boss or a Digitech rp2000 for a lot of the guitar sounds (that digitech unit rocks!). From there, I bounced down to a two-track Minidisk via optical cable.. although I must admit, the sound loses a certain warmth using the cable, but the clarity makes up for it. From the minidisk, I burn to a stand alone CD burner, using an ancient 30 track BSR EQ if needed to clean up anything. (Don't use it much, I try to get the sound I need from the Boss). From the CD, I rip them to MP3 files and I'm done.

Like I said, it's a long process, but it works for me.
Recording to MD allows me to listen and live with a mix for a few days while I make up my mind if it needs anything else. If it need changin, I just erase that version on MD and do it again. I burn to CD for the same reason.. so I can listen to the mix in other environments (like my truck or another stereo system)before I submit it mp3... Don't know if this all helps, but my motto is simple, "Do what works and do what sounds good".

question for Rick...

Rick, what would you say are the limitations of the BR-8 for an artist such as yourself? Also, I'm interested to know if your music was recording exclusively using the BR-8?

Do you find the 100mb time limitations tough to contend with?

Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts...I'm still debating whether or not to buy the BR-8...I'd appreciate any shared thoughts and experiences you might have to offer.

all the work on the first five songs for “Alcyone” were recorded on
The BR8, no loops, little editing, no computers (except for rec.) and
No bouncing…using my much loved korg triton ….and recorded with an optic Toslink cable into my soundboard (sb live) to HD… except “Forest run”…..which in contrast was recorded direct output Triton-soundboard
(SB 32awe!) no BR8…..sometimes think it sounds warmer!
The BR8 is a really fun entry machine for solo (ish) musicians, quality
Is fine…I get along ok with the 100 zip..tidy, safe, and as long as you don’t
Use to many v tracks its ok for a 5/6 minute song (for me)….but then sure
If you can afford larger versions with more inputs and tracks, go for it!
It would be nice to record instruments simultaneously…two keyboards. (in my instance!) the final optial recordings seem to be ok but maybe too clean.
My effects and mixing talents still need brushing up….so it could be me!
Conclusion. If its what you can afford & you play solo, ..buy…otherwise
If you are really serious with your music Invest in one of the larger Roland models.

Hey people,
I've been using the Br8 for a couple of months and recently i find the machine is not working its best. Sometimes the effects dont work,,the name of the effect wont come up when im scrolling through them , just sorta blank space,,it doesnt always start playing immediately when i press play, and although its not a new problem i find that the volume on it is so low that im plugging my headsets into my speakers in order to actually hear whats happening. Does anyone record electric guitar DI? What are youre results? Im not so thrilled with the Br8 anymore. Anyone have similiar issues?

I record all my guitar tracks DI. There must be something wrong with your BR-8, I would take it back to the store where you brought ASAP.
