I want to use a two-mic recording technique for recording my acoustic guitar. One of the mics will be my new Studio Projects C-1 condensor and the other will be a Shure SM-57 dynamic mic. My question is how can I record with both of these mics at the same time on my BR-1600, since the Phantom Power switch (which the C-1 requires) enables all 8 of the inputs leaving nothing for the dynamic mic input?

Do I need to buy an external mic pre-amp to run the C-1?

Not sure I understand. What type of cable are you running between the dynamic and the BR? If it is a 1/4 TRS, it is no problem, as the BR provides phantom only to the XLR connections. If you are running an XLR, I am not sure what problem that would cause. Does the dynamic need phantom? (I'm not a mic expert AT ALL). If not, my guess is it will 'ignore' the phantom power going thru the XLR cable but for sure you should check the manual on the mic to insure it won't cause it any problems. As you stated, if you turn on phantom power, EVERY one of the 8 XLR's have phantom power.

I agree with sp_clark...

phantom power should not affect your SM57 in anyway....

...I run a very similar combination (sm57 into xlr + B1 condensor into xlr both at the same time) with phantom power on and everything is good to go !

It is my understanding the phantom power will not affect a dynamic mic...
...but could destroy a ribbon mic....

I thought that I couldn't use the sm-57 when phantom power was on... so I didn't try it for fear of damaging the mic. Thanks to both of you for responding. I'll try it out tonight.
