BR-1600 and Basic Questions

I can record basic stuff and punch things in and add effects and simple things like that. However, my sound never really the best and more specifically on vocals. I use a BR-1600: I have a sample of something I have recorded to let you hear:

I just want a general opinion about the recording and advice about making it sound better....more professional or whatever.

I too was having touble getting a decent vocal from the BR1600. Couple things I have done that helps. First I got a preamp that seems to give a lot more clarity to the vox. I record vocals dry with no effects. Then I bounce the vocal track so that it is on 2 channels, and one of the channels I add a bit of delay (between 4 and 9) and on the other a bit of reverb (not more than 10). Then I pan one vocal about 3 left and one 3 right. It just gives a fuller vocal sound.

Something you might want to try.

What kind of mic are you using? Sound like the singer is playing guitar at the same time and keeps moving his mouth away form the mic?
Apart from that, I agree with the previous post about double tracking it and pan them. insert different mic patches on playback to see which ones fit the singer's voice best.
One method to do it quick if you can't decide to compare the patches is to do a copy and paste of the vocal track(or several if you have the room), and then insert the patches from there and you can listen to them side by side and start comparison. That's how I narrow down which patches I like for a song then you can tweak it by editing it. Hope this helps.

thats me singing....the problem is im moving away from the mic because when i stay on it the vocals get really screwed up...so i back off to avoid it because as a newbie recorder im not sure waht to do....but ill try what you guys have given so far see how that goes.....by the way im using a shure that cost me about 90 bucks...not sure on model number.

This is how I do it on the 1180.
1.Start playing your song, turn all the faders down except the vocal track you want to toy with.

2.Push the COSM button

3.Using the arrow key, highlight the INSERT line, using the dial, change it from In(insert)to IN(rec.dry) and finally you'll see Track1..or 2 and so on...pick the track your vocals is on...

4.From there, use the arrow keys and go up and highlight the patch numbers, and as you turn the dial you'll hear the different sounds.

5.Make sure that to FX is ON from pushing the COSM button or it won't work obviously.

Also a fun idea, is to copy and paste your vocals, one to the left and one to the right and have different effect patch on the two or this can be used to compare which one you like best. Or if you want them side by side this is a good time to start using the U patches and store them side by side.

Remember this trick for when you start mastering!
