Optimus Prime
Question #1. Can you bypass the amp models and use the effects with your own amp?

#2. Are the effects in the Boss GT-8 as good as the Boss peddles? How are the peddles effects different from the GT-8 effects?

This is actually a great question. I too am looking into getting a GT-8. Against my better judgement (I've owned various Line 6 gear) I bought the Pod XT Live. What a hunk of crap. I've went on their website and forums to find the right way to hook it up just to use the effects, not any modeling. I've tried every combination, with every eq setting you could think of, and man the thing just sounds HARSH. If anyone has a GT-8 that is using it through a head or combo amp, JUST FOR IT'S EFFECTS, I'd like to know how it 's working for ya. I went to the website and listened to the mp3, but it's modeled distortion. I want to know how this thing sounds hooked to tubes! :D

Ok, I went and picked one of these things up over the weekend. First off let me say, I DESPISE Guitar Center. It's cool that keep alot of cool stuff in stock, but the idiots that work..............UGH! Anyway, I'm getting off the subject. Ok, the Boss GT-8. I was impressed by the effects on this thing. Not harsh, nor brittle, unlike the POD XT Live. I was even pretty impressed with some of the modeling this thing does. Although that is not why I bought it. I love my Triple XXX head's distortion. I tried hooking the GT-8 a couple of ways:

Guitar-input GT-8-input Triple X head Not so good-sounds were harsh
GT- through my effects loop A little better, everything sounds
Everything sounds good on clean
but so-so with distortion

Guitar-GT-8-Triple X head effects return This bypasses the pre-amp and
just uses the power amp of the
head. You have to use the amp
modeling if it's hooke up this way
It sounded very good, but didn't
have the warm, milky, smooth,
flowing, tube distortion.
4 -wire hook up (great explanation This was the optimal hook up for
of this in link above) my set up. Effects sounded good
my distortion.

Overall, for the price, I think the Boss GT-8 is very respectable. Yeah, there's better units out there, but not in the $450.00 price range IMHO :D
