Someone has offered to sell me a used Boss Dr-5 drum machine for cheap. I've been doing some home recording and want to find something to record drums cheaply. Can I use this machine to record the drum parts for punk songs by bands like the Ramones and Rancid? What would the drums even sound like on this thing - very cheap and tinny? I record guitar and bass through my Tascam US-122 with a Vox Amp Modeler - I use N-Track Studio as my software. Just wondering what the DR5 would sound like?

THanks,
E

I always looked at the DR-5 as a low level filler; if a song warranted serious quality, then drop the DR-5 drum tracks later and pay someone like Rami or some drummer-for-hire to lay down a much higher level drum track into the tune.

With that said, I've had the unit laying around, banged around, left on for days on end.. and used for... geeez? 8years! never a problem with it or the wall wart p.s., no jack problems, no memory problems, no buttons sticking...great hardware design!
The programming is pretty easy. It was around $400 if I recall correctly.

In short, DR-5's a "click track" demo idea tool, well built too, but several levels below getting a drummer-for-hire to add to your tracks. imo.

here's one using the DR-5..not Punk or Heavy Metal...well, it might be...
its the clean "kit" click track and the little piano part from the DR-5...

but don't let this keep you from buying it. :p

here's another with the DR-5...this is like a Slipknot one, without the drumming and heavy metal thunder rock stuff..
