Boss Br600 adding effects to dry recording

I have recorded stuff WITH effects in them.
How do I record a dry song and then experiment with adding effects after the fact?

I have the manual but haven't been able to get it to work.

BR600 Insert FX can only be applied when recording, to add these to dry tracks, you need to bounce the track(s) to 7/8, adding the FX during the bounce. You can then copy those tracks back to 1-6 for use in further mixing. See page 95 of the manual (Changing the destination...)

It's been a long while since I've used my BR600 but I seem to recall being able to record takes dry but with the efx "auditioned", meaning that I hear them while recording but they're not printed to the track.
