Just noticed you guys using mic pre amps. My dealer (music not drugs) says that the BR900 (and presume the other boss machines) dont need pre amps but I find that I do (otherwise need the gain on max). Anyone tried without pre amps and what results do you get ?

You need a preamp for the BR600 if you have a condenser mic that needs phantom power. The BR900 has phantom power available.

sorry, should have said,

using dynamic mics, both are preety old but niether work without a pre amp

Time for some new mics, I guess!! I'm using a Shure SM57, no preamp.

More br-600 queries and questions

just got my br-600 yesterday and am going nutz today trying to figure the thing out. The manual is ok but there are a few things i need some help with. Can you record the drum tracks and your mic1 at same time or do you have to record each seperately? Any advice you more experienced users have would be terrific!! Thanks y'all! -Dan-

Are you happy with your 58 with no pre amp on the Boss ?

By the way, does anyone use a pre amp on the Boss seris. I am using an ART which suggests you use the line input BUT the line input does not give a vocal mic patch. Anyone had the same problem ? Is it possible to record without the patch ?

You don't "record" the drum track until the final mix-down.
I usually lay down a rhythm guitar track first to a straight drum beat, then use the measure count to program the drum track. Record a bass or 2nd guitar track to the programmed drum track, see if any tweaking of the drum track is needed - you may want to 'throw out' the original rhythm guitar track at this point. (Note I use guitar because that is my main instrument, use whatever you use for a main instrument!)
Then you can layer on your other instruments and vocals.
When you get to the point where you have filled all 4 mono and both stereo tracks, do a mix-down WITH the rhythm track (drums). After doing that, you can do any further tracks (backup vocals, more instruments, etc) on other Virtual tracks (keeping your original instrument tracks in case you decide to remix).

The sound recorded with the SM57 and the Boss 600 is excellent, although double mics would be nice (if I could afford another) for recording acoustic guitar.
You can create your own f/x patches on the Boss machines, so you are not limited to the pre-sets for mic, guitar or line inputs.

I'm still trying to work out how to record drum tracks, the manual is bloody hopeless.

Are you trying to lay down your own drum patterns, or program from the on-board sample tracks? Its pretty straightforward if you have programmed a Boss rhythm machine before. Choose your drum patterns, arrange them, program them in. You put the drum pattern number into the measure number you want, it'll repeat that pattern until it sees a new pattern number in a following measure. If you change tempo set that for the measure when you set the drum pattern.
