I'm trying to decide on which to buy. Can anyone give me any feedback?? I am using a TASCAM 4 track right now and would like to get a Boss 1180CD or a Korg D12 CD, but am not sure what's better. Thanks!

I spent several months looking into different digital units and bought the BR-1180 CD 3 weeks ago. I previously used a Fostex X-55 4-track, so I'm kind of in hog heaven. Despite a poorly written manual, which seems to be par for Boss/Roland, the unit is incredibly easy to use. Using the rhythm track takes some work at getting right, but once you do, it's great. Initially folks were reporting problems of running out of recording time sooner than anticpiated, but it seems that was an omission in the manual and once foks learned to optimize their recordings, the problems seemed to cease. There is a user's group on Yahoo which has about 120 users and only one has had a unit that had to be returned.

There are also some updating issues for users who don't have the ablility to hook up to their computer, but BOSS says they're going to take care of that. There has already been one update released.

The guitar, vocal, microphone and speaker effects are amazing and provide just about any sound one could possibly want, plus you can adjust them to your own preference and save them.

I don't know that much about the Korg unit, except that the effects I heard on a demo unit don't hold a candle to the 1180. Having used a 4-track for almost 7 years, I'm really spoiled by this unit and find myself doing a lot more work with it. The whole recording process is much easier and more pleasurable for a non-techie songwriter like myself. Good luck with whatever you decide.

The link for the 1180 Users Group at Yahoo is in a previous post in this category, which you should be able to access using the search function.

So, you can easily sync the 1180 with a pc and run mixing? I was told that was tough to do. Thanks.

I've never tried "syncing" the 1180 with a PC for mixing. What I have done is burned my unmixed tracks to a CD-RW and import it to use a PC-based mixinging board. I've only done this a couple of times for other peoples' projects. My own are basic songwriter worktapes and demos which are recorded, mixed and mastered on the 1180 itself. I do import tracks as wav files so that I can send them to collaborators, but that's the extent of my computer use for recording purposes.

I recently received a CD which was completely recorded and mixed on the 1180, but was mastered in a studio. It's been released commercially and is comparable to other indie CDs in technical quality.

I am in the same boat. I bought a BR1180CD and I don't have any useful knowledge about the other unit.

It is a lot of fun for me. As the Woland Website says, 'manual shmanual'. I agree that the effort made on the manual was negligible, and that it is a sizeable pain in the ass, and I also agree that it needs to be read anyway.

My brand new Version 2 unit started seizing up in the middle of recording, displaying the message'Drive Busy'. I finally had to send the bugger away to be fixed...about 250 miles down to Vancouver. Turns out the HD was pooched. (replaced N/C) Another symptom was that the remaining time display was exactly, I mean exactly half what it should be. So, new it was like 60 hours, and after recording one 4 minute 8track song, it was down to 29 hrs and change.

Just a heads up for potential problems.
