Trailing Behind Again
I've burned myself out doing too much for too short a time. I am trying to make up for almost 6 months of nothing.

I've gotten this as far as I can, so I need some help with the mix.

It's called "Leona"

Thanks!

Sounds nice Rokket. I like what you've done. Will there be lyrics? Mix wise, the kick and bass seem to clash a bit and the compression overall sounds a bit heavy. That's all I have. :D Nice job man.

I'll take some of that compression off. I think I may have boosted the kick and the bass in the same freq.

No, there won't be any lyrics for this. I have some written, but I don't think I want to put them on.

Thanks for the listen.

Weird.... I just checked over the tracks, and I haven't done anything to the eq on either the drum or the bass...

I guess I can do some cutting in the 100hz range on the bass...

I hear Rush, Caress of Steel/2112 era :D.

Bass on my setup is a little too boomy. Maybe trim some of the sub frequencies a tad.

It's a nice groove doesn't really seem to go anywhere interesting. I have a few dozen songs/licks like this that sound great but I couldn't develop past a few parts and they really lack enough substance to be 'songs'.

What about a lead part? Do you know any piano or horn players?

On a side note - I took almost a year off before returning to recording. Since my 'return' I've written and recorded my best work yet. I started imagining music again, something I hadn't done in probably years. Now I work things out while practicing (in one case for over a month) before finally bringing it to Lew so we can collaborate and finally record. Point is that I started doing things differently as a result of the vacation from recording. My skills as an engineer were always there, with some help along the way from you wonderful people. I needed to learn how to be a real song writer and composer. The songs used to be the excuse to record, and now they're the reason to record.

I have crap loads of them. I wasn't born with the songwriting gift. :D

This one started out like that.

I never got it past this stage. It was more a recording exercise anyhow. I wanted to see how much better my mix would be if I took some time on the tracking side of it. Beyond a little reverb and too much compression, I haven't really done much to this track.

I think the bass is too boomy too. I just wasn't sure on my system because I don't have decent monitors. I am still using my pc speakers and headphones... :o

Me 2, Logitech z5300 (or something lioke that, 5.1 with plenty of volume and clarity) and Sennheiser HD 280 pro headphones (also have a spare pair of AKG headphones I could use as a reference). I play my final mixes on the living room stereo (a hometheater in the box not much better than the Logitechs on the computer/recording room) and in my car stereo, a decent 6 speaker monsoon system that gives me my best reproduction out of any of the above. Once it sounds good on all 3 sources it's a rap.

The trick to most higher end PC speakers is in the EQing. The Logitechs have too much bass and can sound muddy if not properly set.

I don't have high end speakers, which is why I used headphones most of the time. But they don't give you a true representation of what you are doing. Everything is right in your ears.

Oh well, one of these days I'll have a proper set up. Maybe by then I'll even know what to do with it!
