I have always had good luck recording t-bones with the 421 sennheiser.Works good on bari sax and flugelhorn also.

I always use a LD condenser to record my trom. The trick is placement. Depending on the tone you are after, spend 15-20 mins experimenting with mic placement first. I've even had the mic behind me in a live room.
