It's the smell..
Suppose for a moment you have a Dog....Bob. One day he snags the keys to your sled and heads to the mall. This is pretty much what it sounded like....

SoundClick artist: Teysha - Instrumental Southwestern Jazz with a little chaos thrown in...

Did some much needed writing this weekend. Been way too long. :o
Mixed on some new (to me) monitors that the guitarist brought with him...Samson Resolv A6. Decent boxes but a little soft in the mids as this mix seems to border on harshness in the 1k range. Turns an organ into a effin' WMD.
What say ye, mixwise?

Thanks for the listen Bobbo! I guess the mids weren't killing you then.:drunk:

Pretty fucking smooth. This is turning into a good week here. Getting stuff that's great right out of the box. I'm a fan.

Aw damn, I gotta give something. Maybe a dB lower on the Hammond? There. Righteous.

Sounds good to me. Jammed along with it for a bit. good groove.

Not crazy about tish tish of the hihat; a little robotic. nitpicking, though.

Sounds pretty good to me, except for the hats/cymbals. Very canned sounding, but I guess that comes with the territory. It's a little light in the bottom end overall on my system, but just barely. I'd like a little more bass gtr and kick drum. Pretty good overall though.

You've a good stereo image.
I like the organ - the harshness is more in the horns to me but only a tad.
THough in the organ solo when the high notes are hit it does get a little edgy.
Can you add swing to the hihat?

Thanks for the listen, guys. Yeah, the canned drum track is a bummer. I had a live drummer ready for the weekend but he flaked out at the last moment, so canned was all I had to go with. I did record a click track with this so hopefully I can get him to lay the tracks this week. Also, I think I'm going to give the guit tracks to ZpahodB and let him tear this up.

Smooth tune, I like this a lot. Cool to hear an instrumental. You got a sweet sound on the guitars, they sound well nice, I dream that get that sort of sound, really good playing and all. :) It's a cool beat, and I enjoyed all the varied instruments that popped up throughout.

Tune fits the picture of that dog, that's for sure, I imagined him skulking through the mall to this song. Yeh...good stuff. :D

Someone's been listening to some Steely Dan. I mean that in a good way. The horn section is smidge big, I think. Just a smidge; but then, MIDI horns are always difficult to get to sit smoothly. Love the doubling between the guitar and bass. The organ work is a delight. Everything is clean and tasty. and yeah, the only thing really wrong with the drums is the cymbals, they sound more artificial than the rest; if you had a more "human" sounding setup; they would be a non-issue. You could try burying the cymbals in the mix and adding a real shaker part; I find that can really humanize a drum part well.

Been too long, I haven't been here in like three years. Glad you're still at it and kicking butts! :)

Nice performance.

Good sound in the mix. No harshness here on my KRK V6s and they usually point that out.

Thanks for the listens and comments...I really appreciate the feedback. Glad to hear the mids weren't just crushing anyone. With time now, they seem to seat a little better than my first impressions.

Phil...funny you should bring up SD. Actually, I had just seen them in concert the weekend before this. I've always been a huge Dan fan and have enjoyed Donald's evolution into square white funk...from Kamakiriad forward. That spare groove is definitely a Dan influence. The small dry snare is what I hear Keith Carlock using alot and it got my attention.
The horn lines were a bit much, but I built them using 6 tracks 2 trpt 2 tbone 2 saxes....might have over-reached there.:) I told Vance, the guitarist, to go listen to some Walter Becker after this session. Walter's work at the concert was sublime....slinky, sneaky and understated. It was really nice to hear him play. Good to see you login are here again.

Thanks again everyone, for taking the time to critique the mix.:)

It's a lot of fun to allow our influences to color our choices, isn't it? :) Glad to be back, man. :) Morph the Cat is still one of my top 10 of all time favorite albums.
