Anyone tried the "Blue Ball" mic? If so, for what application and how do you like it?

Thanks,

I really like it on guitar amp and floor tom. I think it's pretty good on backing vocals.

It's unlike any other mic. You'll have to try it to see if you like it.

I like it sometimes on guitar cabs, sometimes it's absolutly unuseable- depends on the player. If i want a guitar tone to sit in the mix a certain way, i think.. BALL!

I'd love to use it to get a cool snare sound, but it's so damn obtrusive that just hasen't panned out, same goes for toms. Still need to experiment more on kick with it- i just usually go with what i know there...

What it can do for a rather nasaly voice is intresting.

It's almost like the mic makes bad sounds sound ok, and ok sounds sound bad... lol.

I haven't tried either, but there's two versions: a dynamic and a newer one that's a condensor.

I have one of these and haven't really found anything that it stood out on. I tried it on kick and floor tom and hated both of the tracks. I haven't tried it on guitar cabs yet, cause I usually use 57s and MXL 1006s, and I love the results. I sang through it for fun and didn't think it was good...or bad.

Anyone have any great applications for this?

Do a search on this. From what I read in Search, you either hate or love this mic. No middle ground.

I did a search, that was how I found this thread. I was hoping for live input...not canned stuff already written. Time has passed since the mic came out and everyone was speculating, so I wanted actual opinions and results.

Thanks,
I had a chance to try the Blue Ball not to long ago... I tried it on kick, bass amp, and guitar amp... and I didn't like it at all. IMO, the Blue Ball has no balls.

I'm really curious as well. From what I've heard, it's only available in a package with some focusrite channel strips. I really want to hear the first reviews of them.

yah i hate it when i get blue balls...hurts like hell.

;)

danny

(im surprised no one jumped on that one)

another vote for hating the blue ball.

sold mine right away. overpriced! overpriced!

buy a decent "tom mic" or some other smallish dynamic. pop the thing open and take out the capsule. $29 for the mic (or so)

then buy some sort of ball. hard probably. so not a wiffle ball. go to a thrift store, find something round and hollow.

mount capsule in ball.

i think you'll get the same sound.

yeah but can wiffle balls handle phantom power?

The mic sounds like blue plastic.

or yellow plastic sometimes.

I recorded a vocal with it last week. I was doing a scratch track, so I just threw it up to experiment. It was defintly different. I threw a little distortion on it via SF distortion plugin - the "lil warmer" preset. The blue plastic sound almost worked. If only it was red plactic.

this is really a "bizarro world" feature of the blue ball (as marketed by blue).

oh boy, i always WISHED my dynamics NEEDED phantom to work. that whole, not-needing phantom power thing has been KILLING me.

again, yea, it will get you a cool unique sound. but a $199 cool unique sound?

no fucking way.

It's $149 now.

Plus the phantom power thing supposedly does something. You don't know what it would sound like if it didn't have the phantom powered impedence feature.

I personally like the Blue Ball. I ended up trading mine in, but I personally thought it was a decent vocal mic (100 times smoother than an SM57) and an awesome amp mic. I would have kept mine if I didn't want a pair of MK319s and an Sennheiser e309 silver more.

When they're down to around $100-$125, I'm going to snatch one right up. I might even get one if they stay at $149.
