blown PA speaker replacement

I am looking to replace a blown PA speaker, and I haven't had much luck searching on google for this answer. The speakers are peavey 12" with a piezo tweeter and no crossover. each speaker cabinet is 16 ohms, being run in paralell for 8 ohms total. Each speaker is 100 watts handling and the head is 100 watts total. so it is a small setup. one of the 12"s blew and I am looking to replace both 12"s inexpensively but I also hope that maybe the new ones will sound better than the old ones. where would you look?
 
check the local craigslist for EVM12l's or the jbl equivelent should be like a d120 e120 or 2212 i think...

Thanks for the tip - I have some old Music Go Round/Sonic 12" with horn monitors that need reconditioning, or to be gotten rid of... but they work well in tight spaces. Really boxy sounding!

Now if only there were a reasonably priced two way crossover to be had - Carvin's are 2x as much as I'd be willing to shell out.

If you were to use a crossover, you could use 8ohm speakers. But I'm not sure you want to go down that road.
 
There is a lot more to replacing bass speakers in a 2-way PA cab then just installing a new one. Boingoman actually has the best suggestion. You need to match the model of Peavey speaker you are replacing and hope that Peavey hasn't changed the parameters for that model. Is your cab a "sealed cab" or a "Ported Cab" ? What is the interior volume of the cab? The actual Bass driver is designed for a spacific size and type of cab. The wrong speaker in a paticular cab won't hurt anything, you just may not have any bass below 150hz. or a 12db peak at 240hz.

Just how new or old is this PA?

Nice points, adwaz. Only I don't think this is really a 2-way system. There is no crossover. The cab is sealed...its a pt112, mid-80s. The original speaker was 100 watts 16 ohms. I called peavey and their replacement is 50 watts, 16 ohms. I do not think this is a good idea....I think I would rather have more watts than less.
 
Alright, since peavey didn't have original speakers I ordered a pair of replacements that were 16 ohms, 100 watts. I need some help mounting them. here is the situation:

cab is front loaded. speaker came with foam on front, not rear. its not really moveable. funny thing is, the original speaker didn't have any foam protection either. it just sat metal on wood. so I go to drop in the new one that way, and well, the hole isn't exactly right...the new speaker tapers off slightly differently, it doesn't drop in all the way.

so do I just sand this hole down, or try to find some foam, or what?
 
So you are saying that the speaker basket is shaped a bit different and it doesn't quite fit? I've had that happen before and I just trimmed the hole slightly until the speaker fit correctly. It's not a big deal.
