Yes If you didnt read a thead two days ago, the Drum mic that radio shack has that is the sennheiser e603 is on sale for the whole month.

Actually, it's made in the Phillipines and looks a lot like the D504 or the E604 made by Sennheiser. The output is about the same, but it's a little brighter. It has a similar drum mount which makes it really easy to position without using up any mic stands.--

I bought 2 today, (thats all they had). I want to end with 4. That would get the whole set. At pro25, 2 behringer ecm8000s.

I recently got a Mic pre made by yamaha that gives me up to 64 db of gain to 8 tracks. Its a MLA7 are you familiar with it? Its pretty clean. I wanted to use it with My akai dps16, which has 8 inputs.

Nahhh, I'll pass on this!! Luv U Harve-Master Gee, but I refuse to
buy any audio-related products from Radio-Whack ('ceptin' for
emergency cables, plugs etc.) even with your platinum recommendation! I'll simply sit back and wait for your next bargain-basement mic purchase thread!

For $30 a pop, I am interested. What is the Radio Shack model number of this mic? (God, I never thought I'd lust for a Radio Shack mic!)

I just checked out the mic on the radio gack site, its model #33-3032. It says its good for kickdrums but comes with tom mount clip. Does anyone think this mic is worth it??, i mean harveys the man and all , has anyone else used one??? Darrin??
I would like to get 2 for my rack toms.

detune6,

Look, it's pretty simple. I run a small studio here (well, not so small anymore) and my son is a drummer as well as an engineer. We have 4 different drum sets, about 6 or so different snares, and we often have two drum sets miked up and ready to go.

Each set is different: a Tama set (w/double kick, 4 rack toms and a floor tom), a Premier set (w/kick, 4 rack toms and a floor tom), a Mapex set (w/double kick, 4 rack toms and a floor tom), and a Pearl set (kick, 3 rack toms and 2 floor toms).

That means we hafta have a lot of mics on hand, so I'm always looking around for mics that'll work well, and if they're cheap, even better.

Right now, the "best" (if such a thing exists) mics I've found for high toms are:

Sennheiser D504/E604 (same mic)
Audio Technica Kick/Tom
Radio Shack 30-3032 Kick/Tom
Shure SM-57

For the floor toms, we'll usually use:

Sennheiser MD421
Audio Technica ATM25
Audio Technica AT Pro 25
Audio Technica Kick/Tom

We keep a pretty good supply of each mic around here, and usually one of the above mic types will work just fine on any drum set we own, or any set of drums that someone brings in.

That's the whole point; if you're on a tight budget, the R/S or the AT kick/tom will do a good job (and sometimes a great job) on miking toms. The important thing is that at least they won't ever suck, and they won't drain your bank account.

For the record, this is the rest of our usual mic setup for drums:

Kick:
Either the D112, the ATM25, or the AT Pro 25. We also have an old AKG D12e, an EV RE-20, and the Sennheiser MD41 available.

Snare:
Either the Shure SM-57 or the Beyer M201. When Alex does mic the underside, he usually uses a Shure SM-7. I don't like to mic the underside of a snare

HiHat:
When we do mic the high hats, my son Alex likes a Shure SM-7, coming in from underneath, pointed up. I use a Beyer 260DX Sank-modified ribbon mic, coming in from outside the set, pointed at the back of the high hats, about 3" above the hats.

O/H: This one is all over the map. On any given set, we may use a pair of the:

Audix TR-40
Behringer ECM8000
Oktava MC012
MXL 603S
EV C15P
Shure SM-81
Sony C-38 for the ride side, Neumann TLM103 on the crash side.
Anything else we have laying around.

Room mic:
We rarely use a room mic, but when we do, we both like the MXL V77, the V67G, or the Studio Projects C1, or an old Dan Kennedy modified Fairchild F-22.

THANKS HARVEY! Im going to go check those out, because im on a budget.

Thanks for the tip.I picked up a pair at my local store.

Ok, I just went next door and looked. Here's what I found:
The AT Pro 25 and the unmarked Pro 25 are identical. We have at leat 1 of the AT Pro 25s and two or three of the unmarked Pro 25s. We just got 3 of the AT kick/tom mics and they are different than the Pro 25 and the unmarked Pro 25.

I haven't heard these new kick/tom mics yet, so I can't comment on them.

I bought one of those RS tom mics today and I can't stand it. No low end response and no high end response either. Sounds like it rolls off at about 800Hz. I tried it every way I could think of and its just plain awful. Maybe I got a bad one? I don't know. I could get nothing remotely useable from it, so its going back ASAP. Sounds like a CB mic to me.

I have been thrilled with Harvey's suggestions like the V67 and V93/2003 as well as the ECM 8000's. All great. I could find no use for this RS mic. Sucked on toms and kick. Tried a bunch of mic placements and had no success at all. I did a routine voice test just to see what it was picking up and the frequency response was dismal. Maybe it would be a good harp mic? Like I said, maybe I got a bad one or something. Am I missing something here Harvey? BTW, this is not anything personal, but I was just so surprised by the results I got. The only good thing I can say about it is the off axis rejection is very good. Oh well.

hmmm, sounds very interesting!! radio shack doing a good mic?

is anyone willing to post me one to the UK? "the shack" wont do it. i will pay postage, obviously. at $30, you cant go THAT wrong.if you dont like it on the drum kit, it'll probbaly be usefull for something totally different later on! the drum clamp thing costs more than $30 here in the UK, so the mic will be a nice bonus!

i hope there is someone who is willing to help me?

Harvey,
I'd be interested to hear how you feel about the kick/tom mic in comparison to the pro 25. I hope you will post something about this when you get a chance. Thanks.

Anyone,
While on the subject of micing drums...I have a set made up of 1 kick, 1 snare, 3 rack toms, 2 floor toms, and 1 floor tom to the left of the snare. I want to mic the toms because they get drowned out of the mix w/ just the overheads. Do I need to mic every tom individually or could I get away with placing a mic between each pair of toms. Example: putting one between the high and mid rack toms, another between the mid and low rack toms, and a third between the two floor toms. Thanks for any advice.

Crawdad,

That's strange. While it sounded like shit on a kick drum, both Alex and I thought it was quite usable on the toms. It could be bad quality control, but I really don't understand the big difference between what I heard, and what you're hearing. I'd love to put the two mics side by side, or email your address to me and I'll loan you mine to see if there's a difference between them.

Slacker90,

I did plug the AT Kick/Tom mic in briefly and compare it to my stock AT Pro 25. Just talking into it and tapping the shell, it seemed to have a slightly higher resonance, less bottom, more top, and a little lower output than the AT Pro 25. It is definitely not an AT Pro 25 and it's on hold on my "recommended list" till I do some more testing.

Harvey--I think I must have a bad one. I'm going to return it and maybe get another one from another store, just to see. I appreciate the offer but I don't want you to go through loaning me one and all that. I'll try another and see if there isn't a difference.

They are now down to $19.99... I bought 3 today, might opt for one or two more... a posted a little almost-nothing review a few thread up or down from here...
