Polls like this are very opinion based...no one can agree on one band they fealt was a good metal contributor...I really dont like metal, but i said sabbath..cause they were good haha. But regardless the basis of this poll seems pretty lame personally...wanting everyone to know how awesome metallica was..and i mean was.

I think its more based on opinion than fact. Pretty much like this entire thread. Personally I prefer Metallica. Personally.

yea, well, the fact is also that sabbath basically created metal - while metallica were still shitting their diapers no less

And your point is?

I should therefore have to like Sabbath more? I prefer Metallica. I prefer Metallica's music. That's my opinion. I don't give a fuck if Sabbath invented oxygen. I prefer Metallica's music.

Bach was around long before Sabbath. Is it therefore wrong that I prefer to listen to Sabbath than Bach?

See this is what happens with opinion threads...and no, u dont. Btw the thread poll title isnt who started metal, its who contributed the most to it..and u can say its the band that did start it, or the band that made it immensely popular. I'll say this, i heard of metallica years before i heard of sabbath, now obviously theres a bit of a generational gap, but still. I could almost gurantee more people have heard metallica than sabbath. And if popularity of a genre ties into contribution into a genre, then i'd say metallica would win...personally.

I still think that Lars Ulrich is the most underated live drummer in the world. If you watch some of their live DVD's it shows. If you hate it before you even give it a chance then you're an arrogant fuck and I'm going to send Myhatbroke after you. Miserable washed up rockers on this forum like to pick on them because they've achieved what everybody in here would love to achieve. Maybe Kirk isn't the best soloist on his own, Jason Newsted is a quitter, James sings poorly on demos...oh no god forbid anyone rehearses...but it's how the whole package comes together that makes Metallica exciting and the level of involvent they continue to receive in large crowds. And what makes it sweeter, is the people that hate them as they continue to thrive.

To be honest there are bands I prefer to all of the bands listed. I actually prefer The Black Dahlia Murder to all of the bands listed. But that's neither here nor there because this whole thread is fucking stupid. Especially considering the title "Metallica clearly owned metal" is fucking stupid and meaningless in itself. I always turns into a pointless quest to define "the best". There is no fucking best. Best is a matter of opinion. And contributions made by the band all depend on how they affect you personally.

A friend of mine is obsessed with defining the best, and has trouble grasping that any measure of goodness in music is a matter of opinion.

To him (and he's talking from a skill and ability standpoint, ratherthan musicality, which makes it all the more laughable) John Fruscantie is 'the best' guitarist. Flea is 'the best' bass guitarist, and Chad Smith is 'the best' drummer (although he shut up when I showed him a video of Joey Jordison, not that I'm comparing the 2, just saying that he shut up at that point). And him to Korn are 'the best' metal band (I don't even need to begin with what's wrong with that).

To him, this is fact, not opinion, and he firmly beleives that everyone else is wrong and that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are the best musicians to grace the face of the planet. Of course he can't play a music instrument so I don't know what the fuck he measures it by, but my point is that trying to define 'the best' of anything in music is fucking pointless and stupid.

Your friend is a snapperhead.

Fuck Metallica

Fuck those assholes. They got my Napster account canceled.

Only reason I like that song Enter Sandman is because it's Mariano Rivera's theme song when He's (with a capital H) walking to the mound.

Fuck Boston, by the way.

Nice to see your priorities are in order.

The members of Metallica have said that Black Sabbath and Ozzy in particular were the sole influence for Metallica. So, Black Sabbath were the first.

Ah, but who influenced Sabbath?

To honest, if it wasn't for Charlie Christian, the guitar would potentially still be a background instrument and metal wouldn't exist.

Well, someone else would have done it eventually but you know.....

That's not true. The NWOBHM was as big if not bigger than Sabbath as far as influence goes. That included a lot of bands. Also Zeppelin and Deep Purple were huge for James and Lars, respectively.

I voted for metallica, becouse probably without metallica there wouldn't be many of the metal bands I like, or the metal genres I like.
But I guess many of the other bands contributed more to heavy metal, which is the metal that started all, but I personally don't like heavy metal, but I do love the genres that evolved from it (metallica being on of the evolving acts)

Being an old geezer [born in 1960] I grew up with the original heavy metal bands. Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly,The Who, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Golden Earring, Blue Oyster Cult, Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, UFO, Scorpions, VanHalen.
Metallica has some good music but they are not inovators just spin-offs of what came before. They did help to keep metal alive amidst all of the crap music that was being forced down our throats at the time.

that post is spot on:cool:
