They inspired me to learn the guitar. I'm no longer just a metal head, play blues, surf, even synthasisers. But I'll always remember my routes and inspiration.
Dude you need to get a grip. Metallica doesn't OWN they BORROW. If you would take the time to sit down and really listen to the original metal bands you would realize that Metallica is not very original. They took the tuned down guitars of Sabbath and played a bunch of recycled Judas Priest riffs. Metallica has some good tunes and yes they sell alot of records but they did it by standing on the shoulders of the original metal gods Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. You have much to learn Grasshopper.myhatbroke said:Metallica Owns![]()
Metallica didn't tune down first of all. Second they didn't borrow shit from JP. And third their sound was very original and the riffs they have are unique. You can tell from miles away which is a sabbath riff, which is a maiden riff, which is a JP riff, and which is a METALLICA riff.ocnor said:Dude you need to get a grip. Chris Shaeffer said:Slayer was actually way faster and heavier (still are...) but they didn't have as much commercial appeal. Anthrax was faster and heavier in some ways, too.

THANK YOU DUDE! O by the way i left you a message on myspaceespskully said:I respectfully disagree. Hetfield's riffs sound totally unique to me. When I hear Priest riffs I hear cheese metal. Lame lyrics, silly riffs, a ridiculous image (if that matters to you at all). Metallica always had a far more sophisticated sound than Priest. I'm not arguing about the "who invented metal" thing - can't really say that for sure. But Metallica invented the Metallica sound - and that, to me, is the bomb.
Thats what Ive been trying to say, Metallica has a real Original sound cus they were into punk bands and other music. EVEN COUNTRY!Minion said:Well if there wasn"t Old schooll Punk/Hardcore and Crossover Mettalica would have been another Glam metal band.... Bands Like the Misfits,D.R.I ,C.O.C and the Dead Kennidies had a Huge influence over Mettalica which is what made Mettalica so different from other Metal bands back when they first started out.....
Back before mettalica all of the "Rockers" would gather downtown about once a Month and go on a "Punk Hunt" were they would Gather together and Get Pissed up and go out Beating the Shit out of any Punks they saw or anyone they thought was differant...
Then when Mettalica came out and those Rockers saw that there Favorite metal Band was into Harcore/Punk and wore Misfits T-Shirts the Rockers had a Bit of a Change of heart(Some of them anyways) and instead of haveing Punk hunts once a Month they would get together with us and we would Get pissed up and then they would Kick the shit out of us...LOL At least it was an improovement.....
Then after a while when more bands like Metalica,Slayer,SOD, Pantera, ect became popular I noticed that the Rocker and Punk scenes started to meld together and Musical tastes started to Crossover with each other and the Musical styles started to crossover until we have what we have today in modern Rock music which much of has a Huge Punk/Metal influence......
Cheers
PS: Still ,without Black Sabath Music would not be the same as it is now...They were 20 years ahead of any heavy rock/metal band at the time and there music still stands up today and will endure the test of time...![]()
Everyone covers songs at one time. But they aren't a copy of anything!Ironklad Audio said:i hope the guy who made this thread knows that metallica started out as a diamondhead cover band, and that most of their early shit was a direct rip-off of their style
UHH guy, Slayer and Anthrax came in after Metallica

myhatbroke said:It was actually rare bands no one really has heard of. Also bands like U.F.O. and Santana. so NO I don't think so!
Ironklad Audio said:yea, except for the fact that lars and james themselves have said that they started out playing diamond head covers in lars' garage, then started writing songs that they thought sounded like diamond head songs, which ended up being kill em all
listen to the original, 1973 version of am i evil, and you'll see what's up
Misty Bee said:Metallica would have been formed in England 5 years earlier had Lemmy Kilminster and Tony Iommi teamed up.
Metallica is Sabbath recycled. So what if Kirk thought up diffrent riffs. So did Iommi, and for that matter Blackmore, Page, Steve Harris, Malcolm Young, Rudy Schenker and even poor old Mick Mars!
Metallica started the thrash thing as a response to Motorhead and albums like Ace of Spades, No Sleep Til Hammersmith and Iron Fist. There was a Priest/Maiden influence too, although they could never get as complex as stuff like Phantom of the Opera, Hallowed Be Thy name, Killers, To Tame A Land etc.
Metallica also cashed in on a backlash against the hair/glam movement, which gained them cred in overseas markets before any groundbreaking album ever did. The hair thing was for the US stadiums and MTV - David Lee Roth was better looking than Lemmy Kilminster - and the Yanks as usual sucked up all the glitz. And very credible and able musos got sucked up in it, like Van Halen and Whitesnake, George Lynch, even Ozzy and Dio. AC/DC stopped being the brilliant rockers that gave us Let there Be Rock, and became the Angus Young Show.
I enjoy the Black album. Yet it doesn't even hold a candle to Mob Rules -and I know Bob Rock lovers will disagree. However, before then, Metallica were, quite simply, Sabbath/Maiden/Motorhead wannabees - lamely trying to mix Sabbath's heaviness with the speed of Phil Taylor and the dangerous bikie cultured look of Lemmy, while trying to promote themselves as pseudo Maiden intellectuals with key signature changes.
I recall a music book they released pre Justice - they had all the chords listed as C5, D5 etc. What they meant was that they only used 2 fingers in the chords!!!!! Anyone seen what Murray and Smith had to do to get through Aces High?????
The difference between Sabbath and Metallica is that Metallica use acoustic guitars in songs. Sabbath could have, too, but I couldn't imagine the nice soft Mark Knofler sounds on the Black album on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. An acoustic guitar at a Sabbath recording session would have merely been something for Bill Ward to vomit in!!!!
Fact - Hetfield is yet to come up with anything as remotely powerful as the lyrics of Black Sabbath, War Pigs Generals gathered in their masses, just like witches at black masses.... Hand of Doom, Snowblind (what a f**king awesome song - My eyes are blind but I can seeeee ), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Megalomania, Thrill of it All Won't you tell me Mr Jesus, won't you tell me if you can, when you see this world we live in, do you still believe in man)
This poll is about which band has had the biggest influence on Metal.
Sabbath have influenced everybody in the genre since 1969 who wanted something heavier than Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple - the other members of the triad that created Metal.
Who have Metallica influenced?
Metallica have copied everything. Ride the Lightning's cover is ripped off Thin Lizzy's Thunder and Lightning. Black Album is a photocopy of the far greater Back In Black.
BTW, special mentions must go to Thin Lizzy, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Van Halen and even Hendrix.
Iommi makes Hammet look like an amatuer. Ozzy makes Hetfield look like an altar boy.
BTW, there is a world that exists beyond the USA. And if you wish to paint Metallica's album sales as any indicator - I'll gladly throw back AC/DC at ya.
