Myhat you have to realize that Sabbath was the begining. If there was a heavy metal bible genesis would be renamed black sabbath. Now IMHO Metallica has done it better than any band ever. Yes they got a little wussie in recent years but that sometimes happens with advancing age. You also have to remember that more than a few guys on here are in their 40's and 50's and they've seen this genre from its inception. I love most metal but nothing gets me going like old school metallica. Gives me goosebumps.

I was going to vote for Bon Jovi, but then I realized the poll was for Heavy Metal, not Hairy Metal.

Metallica has clearly revolutionsed metal in every way and I want people to know that. We wouldnt have alot of the rock we have today if it wasnt for them. They were innovative and were truely original.

Metallica, Pantera, and Slayer all started in 1981 and Exodus followed in 1982.
So to say that Metalica revolutionized metal is a little stretch; they were just part of the revolution.

How can someone be innovators and truly original at the same time? But I cannot blame you for voting for Metallica, they are an awesome group.

Bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were truly original, they were originators.

I ended up voting AC/DC because they kept their sound and feel their whole career and have manage to keep going.

Pantera was a Hair Metal band when it started....
Did not know that. Scary!
Speaking of Hair, Mötley Crüe and Queensrÿche statrted in '81 too.

...AND how did I forget in my first post to include Anthrax in the '81 group.

But as for metal influence id say the only thing they did was come up with a heavy sound. Metallica came up with wome incredibly fast riffs that noone else thought of. They did song structures that also no one thought of.

Except Diamond Head and Motorhead, who they drew a large part of their influences from.

Immerse yourself in these bands and then play "Kill 'Em All" and you'll understand that while Metallica kicked metal up a notch, they did not exist in a vaccuum. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) consisting of the aforementioned plus Iron Maiden and Venom played a HUGE role in thrash.

And you can't dismiss the San Fran punk sound that contemporaries Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies were trading with them, especially over-the-top speed riffing.

Just wanted to say....

True, but there was an underground tape trading network. Many diehard metal fans would get copies of copies of cassettes and distribute them to friends. While it wasn't as accessible, it was still a viable option for the most desparate of metal fans to get their fix. It was through a similar network that Lars discovered Diamond Head.

If you want to really understand how 80's metal began, I highly recommend "Justice for All", a bio of Metallica which goes into great detail on the British metal and black metal craze, the thrash/punk and hair metal of LA and San Francisco and the history of such genres.

I have been thinking about this for the last hour.

I think Jethro-Tull is the king of metal.

If you want pure speed, Napalm Death-Scum, 1987. Nothing faster, if that's what matters. Makes Metallica seem prety tame. And seems to me, Metallica wear black all the time, so I have no idea what clothing has to do with the music. And lesser know influences, well, I have some Budgie, Diamond Head, Blue Cheer......

Why? You said Metallica was about speed, Napalm Death IS speed. If YOU can't appreciate them, that's fine, but I sure can. Music is about way more than one band, and one sound. I think Metallica kicks ass, but did music start and stop with them? I think not. I just happen to not confine myself with a narrow listening perspective. I only compare a band to what I like, no other bands. Good music is just good music.....bad music is shit....no matter who does it.

It seems there a very one tracked vision concerning this thread which by far is simple minded.
I think if Metallica was to get praise, why aren't anyone mentioning Dave Mustaine, he wrote alot of tracks which was released and performed by metallica, he wrote music that has been used for Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning and Justice For All, so he is atleast as important as metallica, also his band Megadeth began shortly after Kill em all was released, they are both of same relevance.

Also, when it comes to bands and artists that has inspired bands to become more complex, and heavy, Deep purple is a very vital band to mention, they were EARLY out, in the start of 70 if I'm not wrong, Jimi Henrix, Black sabbath are also vital.
There is also a band that I don't remember the name of, they got a cut in their amplifier , which caused a Sustained sound to occure.
This started a wave where alot of people cut their amplifiers, because they loved the "thick and blurry" sound.

Slayer was early out, about the same time as metallica was out no?.. they are even faster and perhaps more brutal.
Sepultura was early as well.

Pantera was pretty late, but they made metal even heavier I believe.
So I guess, if you pinpoint all bands that has contributed with something, I guess there is no end to how far back we can go to find events that brought metal to become big.
And I guess if one of the Vital bands mentioned didn't start a wave, someone sooner or later would've.

Most of these bands started and released albums/casettes during a time where noone downloaded music ONLINE, they were appreciated, I bet almost everyone of you guys who are posting here on this forum downloaded alot, doing so art has become a daily theft. it sickens me.
But that wasn't the topic, so sorry.

Well, this is just my perspective.

Mustaine had a couple writing credits on KEA and 1 or 2 on RTL - nothing on MOP or AJFA - not sure where you got that from. Dave, is that you?
