Biggest mic

An informal observation on my part indicates that vocalists will tend to want to use the biggest mic I have and not necessarily the best one suited for them......a sad fate for my Oktava 012's.

So, what's the biggest mic ever made? Was it the old RCA ribbons? I recall singing through a real large black Ampeg (I think) in an auditorium many years back that seemed to be bigger.

Anyway, I'm becoming convinced that 'big mic' = clients beat a path to your door.

Find something that looks like a big mic (I had a decco-era electric fan that looked like a vintage mic) and mount your oktava INSIDE of it.

If this works for any potential client you know you have a major idiot on your hands. Good luck!
 
My clients tend to be idiots, otherwise they'd use someone else to record them. Actually they're older folks that sing along in piano bars and have $$. I'd rather concentrate on my own stuff but can't ignore the extra clams. Besides I usually learn something every time around. A keyboard friend digs these folks up and comes to the home studio with the singer and and outline of what they'll do......takes about an hour to record them. A little time with mixing, CD layout, graphics, and they are out the door with a shrink wrapped 'CD'. Plus they all seem to have lots of realatives to give CD's to.

I think they'd like singing into an old fan.


Still, I'm curious as to what some of the biggest mics were (radio telescopes don't count).
 
A Neumann U47 is HUGE. That's an impressive mic the first time you see it. Or you could get a 3 or 4 foot long shotgun mic. I have heard that the Studio Projects mics are really large too.
 
That's the mic I was looking for earlier when I read your thread,It is the first one that came to mind,but I didn't know what type it was.If you ever see the video of Aerosmith "What It Takes" Steven Tyler is in the studio singing into one hanging down from above,looks impressive as hell.I don't know if that is the actual mic they used for the track on the album or if it is just a poser shot for the video.If that is the one they used for the track,that's one hell of a good sounding mic.
 
The shotgun mics have a huge windscreen (the plastic one, not the dead squirell one) that is pretty transparent sound wise. You could stick any mic inside one of those and have a huge looking mic :p.
