How can you tell it's well-gated? Is there something else you'd expect to hear if the gate was off? I mean, I can hear him breath and that is probably the quietest thing you would hear, eh? Just curious. I'm looking to improve my ear.

Thanks.

Without a gate, you tend to hear shuffling of shoes, shirt, clothing. Mouth noises (the movement of syliva).. things like that. You also hear *air*. There is a noise floor to any analog sound.. the noise floor just dissapears when there's no notable sound coming from the vocalist.

When Sylvia did the gating on the vocalist for my band, she purposely left the gate open for breath noises. They can be a *feature* in modern heavy music, and also probably in rap and hip-hop to some degree.

You could achieve something similar, albeit slightly different. Don't yell directly into the mic, or you'll ruin it in 20 minutes. Make sure you buy a pop-stopper or other similar pop filter, and stand behind that.

Standing too close will increase the vocal bass to nasty levels. When you hear your own voice through a condenser you might be surprised by the sound.

Add a gate to the track to make the "silent" parts truly silent.

BTW, the quality control on those mic's is iffy, so if it doesn't sound right, send it back, and get a replacement.

Sure, but that doesn't end your quest for a decent LDC.

You'd be much much happier with a decent LDC.

List the LDC mic's that are not decent so he knows which ones to avoid. ;)

Just my opinion, folks:
MXL 2001
The cheapest Nady one (I forget the model number)
AKG C3000
CAD E 200 (overpriced for the performance you get, although, I'm not certain it's actually a LDC. I think it might have more of a medium diapraghm.)

Those are the only LDC mics that I've used that I don't consider decent. Also, avoid the AKG C1000 (it's a medium diapraghm condensor). It's really overpriced for how good it is. Maybe when they discontinue it, and the price goes down to below $80, I might pick one up to use on toms and clean guitar amp. They work pretty OK in that application.

LDCs I like that I've used (in order of how much I like them:)

Rode NTK. I like it a lot on vocals of all kinds, and on strummed acoustic guitar.
SP B1. I like it on toms and amps.
SP B3. I like it on toms, amps, glockenspiel (in an M/S setup)
CAD M37. This mic worked well on female vocals, guitar amps, and percussion. It was a nice, relatively neutral mic. I ended up selling it to get the B3, though, so that I could have a mic with a figure 8 pattern for M/S.
MXL V67. Pretty good on vocals and classical guitar. I didn't like it a lot on other sources.

Listen, if you want decent vocals, just get a decent LDC. There's no getting around it. Decide what your budget is and just buy one. You’re not going to be happy with a cheap dynamic, but the other suggestions you’ve gotten are great. Why are you being so indecisive?

every Ones going off topic

That's because it's been covered ad nauseum here and in multiple other threads.

Get your SM48 for 30 bucks, plug it in to your free blue tube, and start recording. Then after you've cut a few tracks with that setup, you'll know if you're satisfied or not, and if not, you can come back here with your more experienced and knowledgeable questions and go from there.

I mean, jesus h christ, put out the $30 and get started instead of whackin' off here like the rest of us. :)

i just send out the money order for the shure sm 48 with the 15' cord for 30 bucks so i guess thats what im going to try first ^

Go for it!

Ive seen people make that sound with a sm58, that quality above isnt nothing special its what most of us have now after adding compression a little reverb and messing with a parametric equalizer a bit... You cant afford a good enough mic to record and just have raw vocals sound nice, its way out of your pricerange.. Work on your mixing skills sonny, thats where your problems lay, and dont ask how to mix it cuz i already did and had to figure out theres not a specific way to mix cuz everything is different.. read some stuff on compression and EQing.. enjoy

HEY GUYS IM STARTING AT FULL SAIL IN 2 MONTHS IN THE RECORDING ARTS MAJOR, AND IM SOUNDING LIKE A SOUND ENGINEER YET? lol jus playin but i am starting though, cant wait...
