I have the oportunity to purchase one of these mics for cheap and I think I will. But i'm curious if anyone has used this mic. I'm aiming at using it for drums. If I like it enough, i'll probably replace all of my Shure SM57's with this mic. Its gotten rave reviews for drum use as a dynamic mic. But nothing can beat all your real experiences, so If you've used this mic, let it all out--

It works well on snare and sometimes guitar amps. It's different than the '57 though. I'd still keep my '57's if I were you.

I have two Beyer 201's. Think of them as a refined 57.

They work on anything a 57 does and then some.

Great on snares, often good on toms with their rather pronounced proximity effect.

They even sound better than almost any other dynamic mike on acoustic guitar. They have a really nice top end without the thinness of many SD condensors.

Some vocals can work better on a 201 than even the most expensive condensors.

Be aware they have quite a low output.

One word of warning though. If using them live for vocals etc be aware that being a hypercardioid, they have a very narrow, but quite pronounced rear lobe. This can cause problems with stage monitors. So try and keep them 45 degrees of the rear axis. ;)

i had borrowed one for a year, and i had to give it back. it was like taking my firstborn child away.
