Better way of recording?

Okay, I've tried recording my guitar through virtual amps, however the heavy tone I want can't seem to be reached. When I use just my amp, I get a strong gain sound, which is what I want, but I can't seem to do that with virtual amps. Would it be better to record my guitar with a microphone near the amp? (There's one problem relating to noise on that note, but I'll ask about that in another thread, in another section.)

I've always got my best heavy guitar by micing an amp.

I turn my gain down down more than I would usually have it if I were playin live. Too much gain actually will get you the opposite crunch of what you're lookin for.

I also double track. As in play the same part twice and pan to taste.

Hope it helps man.

Almost always do distorted guitar with a mic. The sims just aren't quite there yet. Now, you can certainly record a secondary guitar with a sim and tuck it underneath if you can get an interesting sim sound that won't work with your amp...But lean on the miced amp for the life of the sound.

Another trick that's kinda' cool but doesn't always fit: If you want heavy distorted guitars but the song itself is not that dark, try recording a saw wave playing the fundamental of the guitar chords for a nice solid low yet bright buzz and tuck it under the real guitars.
