I know the beta 57/58 would suit my live needs rather than the original 57/58..but would the beta 57 be better for mic'ing a guitar cab rather than the original??

Thanks

I'll give you my non scientific opinion. I own both mics. I use a beta 57 as a live vocal mic and I keep an SM57 in the studio for guitar cab micing. If you are just going to be using the mic for guitar cabs, get the regular 57. If you plan to use the mic for a variety of purposes, i.e. vocals, snare drums, tom, percussion and even acoutsic guitar, get the beta57.

The Beta is hotter, so you won't have to crank up your preamp as much--lower noise. As a live vocal mic, you can turn it up more before feedback, which I really appreciate. The high end response is a bit sweeter sounding with the Beta--which doesn't man diddly of you are micing a guitar cab which only reproduces to 5K in the high end anyway.

if you just plan to mic a guitar cab, I think your results will be just as good with the cheaper SM57. If you want to purchase a more versatile mic, go Beta.

Why not just spend the extra $100 and get a Beyer M88 and be eternally happy with the money you spent? You'd dig it for your purposes. Why does everything have to be a Shure 57?

By the way, I can get a decent discount if anyone wants to order a Beyer M88 with me. The more we order, the better it gets. I can get them one at a time for $266... I am ordering a new one for that price very soon, but if we can get a few people in on it, we can get them for around $250, which is an excellent buy to never be regretted. Shipping from me to whoever would probably be about 5 dollars. Might be able to get them cheaper in a quantity of 3 or more, but havent asked. Would be cool to get one for $225..
Anyone interested?

I own both also and second crawdad's post. My Beta 57 stays with the live gear and I seldom think of it for recording, but if I had to choose bewteen a 57 and a beta 57, I'd go with the beta.

and also..

yeah i need the beta for live..less feed back and a lot more stuff. but the 57 is $20 cheaper than the 58 and i might need the 57 for other stuff, is the 57 any worse for live vocals?

thanks

The SM57 has less output than the Beta 57. You also need a pop screen on it to cut down on the plosives. Since you are going to use the mic for both live and studio, I'd suggest you buy the Beta57, even though its a bit more. I don't think you'll regret it.

what about a difference between the beta 57 and the beta 58 for live??

I use both and I like the beta 58 a little better for vocals. The beta 58 gives you a little more gain before feedback and a slightly higher frequency range with less coloration. The beta 57 picks up a little less backround noise, has a more contoured frequency response and it's a bit cheaper. I think it's a better choice for miking the guitar amp.

I always liked the 57's over the 58's, both regular and beta......to the point where, back in my concert/opening act days I'd carry a couple of 57 around and insist on using them. I liked the extra gain and was carefull with plosives. Just a 57 person I guess.

After finally deciphering the ID number on my registered '58 Mercedes 190 that I've had forever, it turned out to be a '57 after all and made me somehow happier.

The Beyer M88 is a fabulous mic, and one of the all time favorites on live kick drums. But if you were expecting it to be an all purpose mic, you have to be careful because it's not always great as a handheld vocal mic - you'll get a LOT of handling noise, and it's huge low end is not always flattering on a lot of voices.

I'm one of the few that doesn't like regular 57s, but I'll gladly use a Beta 57 on anything, especially guitars and vocals. I like the Sennheiser 845 as well.

The first mic I grab for guitars is a Beta 57.

does the sennheiser have as much feedback rejection as the betas?
