- Normally?!!! You do all this normally? (ringing the room)

- Yes, normally.

- Right.
I missed this part. To answer, I do do this normally for live gigs if the PA is not permanent. In my control room, no. I did use the RTA to check what I was working with, but the room was designed well enough that I didn't have to do anything. The whole concept of EQing the monitors for the room is suspect because, if the room isn't even, you can only EQ the monitors to sound right at one position. Depending on the problems in the room, that could be a very small sweet spot.

We seem to be arguing two different things. You seem to be saying that you don't want your creativity curtailed by having to conform to 'standards' (or at least the 'normal way of doing things)
I'm simply trying to answer the question of 'why does my mix sound great in the control room, but sounds bad everywhere else?' The answer to that question is: because your control room is lying to you. There are two ways to battle that problem.
1. Fix the control room
2. Learn what you have to do to make things translate to the outside world.

The easier one (imo) is fix the control room.

Are you saying that after building a perfect control room the producer will never (will not, can not) face the same problem: "why does my mix sound great in the control room, but sounds bad everywhere else?" ???
(or maybe the more you "fix" it - the more your room will become unlike "everywhere else", so chanses are your mixes will give you even more unpleasant surprizes).
Ahhh. No you are not saying that. You are saying: "fix" the room and then "learn it" (the second "way" of battling the problem in your two-way solve_the_problem_101).

I do realize that well established "concepts" are very hard to challenge. Well, there's no real reason to do so. I mean you don't have to (nobody have to) challenge anything, unless you do it naturally.

Here's the top quote from Auralex Acoustics' "introduction to acoustics":
In the beginning, there was perfect sound. Then man invented rooms and forever made it difficult to achieve good sound. The end? Luckily, no....
....And then you get a just-enough dose of "education" for you to become a one of their customers and even maybe! some day to get on their Famous Clients List ... :D
.... Yada-Yada....

- F*ckin' hippies.? Down with the establishment?
- Nop. Just got a bit of still functioning brain and having fun "using it" :p
I say: "There are rooms, and then, there are rooms. That's life. You can try to run away from it, sure." Sounds flat? hmmmmmm.....
Yes. In the beginning, there was perfect sound. And then there were rooms. And there the sound was undefeatable!.

...yeah! as natural consequence of using that chunk of still functioning cortex. :D
You see, I've got very little of that stuff left... ;) , certainly not enough to succeed in "connect the dots" - "get the picture" game .
I am getting this picture: A rever of elephant's urine. On one bank I see busy producers, all and each are working hard sitting in their acoustically-perfect foam-cages, On the other - millions of smiling users of their productions, each and all equipped with i-Pods. And I see The Beautiful Rainbow of Technological Wonders in the shape of a bridge above the stream.
Go figure. :D

...so I am trying to make sense out of it.... and can't.
One thing is clear though: "The Elephant himself is missing". :p

Good point...

It’s funny too… People talk about new and better formats to come, but in reality Joe Consumer is happy with MP3, which have the frequency response of a good (not great) cassette deck, and dynamic range less than a good cassette deck.

There are still plenty of people (mostly a little older) who spend some time and money on a decent hi-fi system.

ipod and web-based MP3 are ok, but that's basically a modern equivalent to a Walkman cassette system or FM radio. That has its place for casual listening. But my generation, at least, always had a real system for the true aural experience.

IMO, not only is making good music a lost art, but so is listening.

Anyway, it does seem that music makers are still producing for the mythical audiophile, who does still exist, but not in great enough numbers to set standards for the industry. ;)

LySsergic acid Diethylamide

Have you taken so much of it that you forgot what it was, or are you doing PCP -laced pot?

BTW PCP=phencyclidine ; angel dust; rocket fuel; supergrass, etc...

"We" ? Who we?
I don't know about "we", but since you say: "My room is all "fixed", and I have no doubt that my mixes will sound "platinum" everywhere as long they sound "platinum" in my "fixed" room", then, clearly - you are. You are done, that is. Congratulation.
And good luck to you in your catching radio-hits tails endeavor.

I'm done here too now.

Yep. Almost all producers are too busy feeding the Elephant. That Yellow River will never run dry.

....
btw, Tim, I do realize that we are not exactly playing the same song. It's like: I'm playing minor blues and you are playing major swing. But, I'd say, it's about as good as it can get ... sort of speak :D
