What is the best setup I need on my mixer for a rich reverb sound for a live vocal performance.I have an sm58 and a rev500 effects unit

Make sure the reverb is hooked up to an effects send and the power is on?

Do what sounds good. It depends on the singer, song and room. Get it to where you think it sounds really cool then back it off about 80% and you'll probably be okay.

Is there a particular type of sound you want to emulate?

Yo FKeefe:

I'm just having a cup of tea and reading your post. Here in the Colonies, there are more reverb units than trees according to the advertising.

As to the "best" setting, that's a creative move by the person doing the dials and the vocalist wanting to hear a "particular" vibration of his or her voice.

I have a couple of good reverb boxes; however, the reverb built into my Yamaha 2816 is better. Why? The entire system stays in the digital domain and Yamaha does make a pretty good reverb.

I have spent six hours twiddling with reverb settings for just one vocal cut on one tune. I'm sure folks on this circuit spend even more time than that to get a result.

So, from the Colonies, I say experiment, use the best gear you can, and don't drown your vocal with reverb but create the effect you want for that given day and it is a given day for a given song for a desired result.

reverb sound

Thanks guys for your help. Im looking for a rich /full sound that would suit a big ballad. Not to dry and not to wet a real full sound if you know what I mean!! At the moment Im using HALL but cannot get the parameters right it is just to dry and if I increase the reverb it just sounds to much I really do need your advice on this one. FK

You can definitely get some nice vocal reverbs with the rev500, but try out the 'rooms' instead of the halls. I like the small and medium ones. Play with the parameters a bit and you should be able to find what you're looking for.

Use High Damp to cut extra high end frequencies that will clash with the vocal.

Use Pre-delay to delay the reverb so the vocal still sounds clear.

Use LowCut to kill any muddiness that you dont want.
