honestly man, it sounds like you need some compression on the vocal mic. That way you have a range of about a foot you can move and the volume stays the same. If you cant afford a basic rack mounted compression unit, have him eat the mic and roll off the bass and mids on the eq for your mixer. The 58 is the standard for a reason. Cheers!
