Hi I'm looking to buy a pretty damn decent vocal mic in the range of 100-200 I guess. I heard the beta 58's are awesome. I have never really tried the audio technicas. Any one have any suggestions?

In that price range there a lot of mics that are better than the SM58. If you are just doing studio work I would look at some of the LD mics out there like the V67g. If you want a handheld the Sennheisers are great. The 865 is great! I use a lot of the 835's for band frontline band vocals.

well there is morely for performing . I just do and acoustic thing with singing. So I want something that will kick ass! I never heard of the LD either.

Consider Sennheiser e845. Hey boys, he's talking about a stage mic! The V67 mentioned above is a perfectly good entry level studio condensor. It requires phantom power, which most small PA's don't provide, and will feed back like a mother on stage. The AKG C535 mentioned above is a top notch handheld condensor mic designed for stage use, and for a solo acoustic act, it rocks. It is not really in your price range, and is a little feedback prone in some rooms, especially if you don't have a guy on the board to keep it in line.
Note that vocal mics are like shoes. They either fit, or they don't. Just because they fit you, doesn't mean they fit me. The SM58 is a standard, not because it is such an all fired great mic, but because it fits a lot of voices, is hard to break, and is cheap, relatively.
I am part of the significant minority of singers that suck on an SM57/58. Many of us prefer the way Sennheiser e835 or e845 treats our voices. For stage use, I usually use a Shure SM-7B, a somewhat pricey radio broadcast mic that is a bit out of your price range. Failing in that, I can use the e835 or AKG D770, both of which are in the $80 range, like an SM57. Now here's a real tip for you. There is an industry standard that almost no one hates, Sennheiser MD421. If you find one used in you price range, cool. You probably won't. But- in the 1980's, AKG made a series of mics designed to go head to head with the 421, the D320 and D330 series. There are four models, D310, D320B, D321, and D330BT They are all similar mics, but I prefer the 320 and 330.
Because of the rapid acceptance of the SM57/58 as the American stage standard, this series of mics did not sell well in the U.S., although they were widely used in Europe. Due to this, they are undervalued, and you can find them cheap on ebay if you are a little patient. I have a D320B I got for $50 on ebay in mint condition, and it rocks on vocals, cabs, and snare. It is far more compareable to the MD421 than an SM57 or 58, but it can be found for $50 or so. Trust me on this one.-Richie

Seriously.. if I were playing live a lot I'd pick up a SM-58.. if I wanted something serious for recording I'd look into maybe an MXL V67G or a Studio Projects C1.

The best vocal mic is the one that suits your voice best. I have never heard your voice. Just start trying various mics and see what you like.
