would like to spend less than $500 (used)...

need a couple monitors for mixing and possibly mastering. i dont currently have an amp to power them, but i can acquire one separately if need be.

Watch for a good deal on a pair of Genelecs--frankly just about any model will be great and better than most of the opposition.
