Best suggested mic position for clean warm bluesy tones

I would put the mic right in front of a clean, warm, bluesy guitar amp.

Then I would play in a clean, warm, bluesy manor. In my case that would be on a guitar. In Bruce's case that would be a snow shoe.

i think they're telling you to experiment and most importantly, use your ears.
When i'm looking for a different sound .. i start with the amp's sound (obviously) .. and then i do lots of running around for the mic position :
2 phases:
Phase 1: Use headphones (from your recording console) and make sure they're loud enough that you don't hear the amp. Don't laugh, let me finish. Now go mess with the mic (with both headphones AND guitar in hand) . find a decent sound.
Phase 2: This part sucks. Everybody knows not to judge sound based on headphones. So!! now that you found a 'decent' sound with the headphones, get rid of em and use your monitors. Now go back to the studio and listen to the sound from the monitors and adjuts the mic acordingly.
Repeat.
It's really tedious .. and it helps if you have a friend that is competent on the guitar and has a similar style than you do, that way you can stay in the studio room. In my case, i have to run around lots.
It also helps if you have a competent 'assistant' that can move the mic specifically as you indicate. This way you can remain in front of the monitors.

I'm not THAT afraid of judging a sound with phones... I always assumed that the prob with cans was rather sound placement and a somehow 'microscopic view' on your sound... YMMV

true enough , primarily since you'de be judging a primarily mono signal .. there's no need to worry about the stereo field.
However, in my case, the headphones frequency response is completely dead wrong compared to my monitor's flat frequency response curve... a product of cheap headphones i guess.
So yeah, I wouldn't have to run around so much if I had a better set of phones that had a flat frequency response.. strictly speaking in terms of a mono signal that's being tracked of course.
