What's the best studio mixer for $1000 or under? I will be using it also as a live console too, but I'm looking for the best for recording.

We have an aphex aural exciter in our rack which improves sound quality dramatically, so our main concern with the mixer is noise... we don't want any at all. Our instruments/vocal mics are all going through high quality preamps and/or effects boxes that are very quiet.

So far, the best choice seems to be the Mackie VLZ 1604. I can get that for $850 at guitar center after bargaining. Another option would be the 16 channel Carvin mixer which I can get for $650. The guy on proaudioreview.com was raving about the Carvin, although I would rather pay $200 more for the mackie just because it's a mackie, and its inputs/outputs are on the back instead of the top. Any suggestions?

If you want a clean signal then get rid of the Aphex.

The Mackie is probably your best bet in that price range. Maybe one of the Soundcrafts if you can find that fits your budget/needs.

The Crest XR-20 is the way to go. I'm a Crest dealer so drop me an email and I'll give you a good price.

Are you really selling the XR-20 for under $1000??? If so, I may well buy one from you soon!
