10,000 Days by Tool. I can't believe how great the drums sounded on that one. The toms sound amazing -- I wonder how they did that?

I also love the sound of "Phobia" by Breaking Benjamin.

I wish I knew how they got the sounds they did.

Blue Man Group - Audio
Fucking amazing album just discovered it and can't stop listening to it!!! The engineer must of had great fun micing up PVC piping (those synth like sounds)

Lovedrug - Everything Starts Where it Ends (Tim Patalan)

Great guitar tone.

Jellyfish- Spilt Milk

good man... you stole mine!

these are albums i really like the sound of (opinion wise):

portishead (all 3)
radiohead ok computer and kid a
supertramp crime of the century
led zep houses of the holy
and many many more...

but yea... spilt milk is probably the best recording i've ever heard.

Im an old zeppelin fanatic, but in all honesty, to me the 70's production has it weaknesses. I know it was cutting edge at the time, but the 80's and beyond offered so many sonic goodies.

If you can excuse the glam metal style, I feel the best recording in the history of the world is "All systems go" by the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. It's the 2nd release that Vinnie made with Mark Slaughter on vocals. It was released at the same time MTV abolished metal music, so nobody's ever heard it.

There are over 100 tracks. Huge guitars, walls of BGV's, great melody's and monster hooks.

Abbey Road by The Beatles. Everything is perfect. The vocals. The bass tone. The drum sound. Everything.

This is more or less still true, but I want to add a few new albums to this list.

My Jethro Tull albums. Specifically Benefit. Wow, what a great sound. Aqualung and Thick as a Brick are pretty fantastic too.

Also, my import copy of Deep Purple's self-titled album from their Mk. I lineup. That is a fantastic sounding CD!

dont know if anyone on this forum likes the scene friendly "deathcore" genre, but for the brief period i was involved in it, All Shall Perish and their albumThe Price of Existence, was brilliant. the drums, although possibly programmed sound amazing, and the guitars stay bright throughout, stand out quite well from the slugde crowd

Radiohead - OK Computer
Los Lobos - Collosal Head
Peter Gabriel - So
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even sank
Hole - Celebrity Skin
XTC - Skylarking

Hard for me to separate production from great playing/arrangements...

Having not read the entire thread but the last page and southSIDE Glen saying every album in the past 40 years have been listed I want to contribute my best sounding album I've ever heard even if it is a copy.

That album being Tommy Bolins "Private Eyes" I'll play this for people who have never heard it and they all swear that it was recorded yesterday Tommy was truly ahead of his time when it came to recording.
If you haven't heard it treat your self and pick it up and give it a listen and when you look to see when it was recorded you'll be more than surprised.

I have to say that "The Great Misdirect" By 'Between The Buried And Me' is by far the best in terms of sound and music i've heard for a long time.
People don't realise how much work goes into the heavier side of music, its so much harder to get a good, full sound when recording metal than any other style i've ever delved into.

Heavy Weather.....Powerage (AC/DC)...Aja....I really like some of the old Sun Records recordings. JLL, Elvis Presley. I am intrigued by the methods in which the old recordings were made.

For anything from the olden days that first came out on vinyl, it's a pretty safe bet that if it was redone later as a half speed mastered disc by Mobile Fidelity Labs, then it was a pretty good recording and judged worthy of a pressing of the highest quality.

Cheers,

Otto

If I Could Only Remember My Name - David Crosby

plus most of the Dead and CSNY and others. The photo of David Geffen in the gatefold is worth the price of admission, but this is the warmest, deepest sounding album I've ever listened to, and I have thousands of LPs and play them through B&W's....

When thinking about the best sounding album it is a hard to pick as it changes with music styles, however there are a few that stand out to me:

Jellyfish: both the Bellybutton and Split Milk, these are excellent sounding albums.

Supreme Beings of leisure: (self titled)

Beatles: Abby Road

And an album I used to EQ my concert PA too many years ago,

Robert Cray: Strong Persuader

And I love Portishead, because these albums break all the rules regarding recording, mixing and what should sound right.

Cheers

Alan.

I disagree. MFSL tends to always scoop the mids out. While the bass response tends to be pretty tight and the highs are sparkly without sounding harsh, they always feel empty sounding.
