I must admit I do like the sound of Load and Reload. I even like the songs, for the most part. What kind of Metallica fan am I??

Supertramp-Crime of the century. If you don't have this BUY IT NOW!
Dire Straits-Communique. Real natural sound.
Bruce Springsteen-Darkness on the edge of town. Never better this, amazingly produced.
Steely Dan-Aja. Don't have to say anything.

deftones' "white pony" has basically set the standard for engineering from my perspective.

A sane metallica fan.
I like all of their records.

Of course St.Anger is the black sheep of their work, but knowing the story on it, and the bands opinion of it makes it less of a black sheep and of course St.Anger was better than most metal stuff coming out these days anyway.

mew - fengers
minus the bear - planet of ice
mewithoutyou - brother, sister
lorien, the ghost in the parlor

dude planet of ice is a KILLER album.. hehe can't wait to get my copy... (i've heard it already like you so we're bad haha)

I think i'll buy it on vinyl though

I don't know if it's the "best" sounding recording.. but it's hard to tell because the album is just too good not to think it's amazing

I will admit I hated St. Anger before I saw Some Kind Of Monster. Watching that gave me a whole new perspective on the album. I can listen to it now, but I still have trouble getting past the drum sound. The songs are awesome live, but as a CD album it failed completely (for me, anyway).

Opeth - Morningrise

Specifically, "To Bid you farewell".
Best acoustic sounding drums on a metal record, ever!

I guess I'll throw in a few.

I'd also have to agree the Maroon 5's "Songs About Jane" has a very unique sound to it. I've heard the reasons as to why it sounds odd, but I don't feel like going through them. Also, I must say that the Goo Goo Dolls' "Dizzy Up The Girl" has a very timeless tone to it. The songs still fit today as they did 7+ years ago. There are also some STP recordings that sound amazing....can't remember the names of the ones I'm thinking of though.

...

THE White Album

Anything Goes - Brad Mehldau Trio

The Messenger - Kurt Elling

Gov't Mule - Dose
Jethro Tull - Stand Up
Steely Dan - Aja
Elton John - Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy
Yes - Relayer (remaster)
Gong - Angels Egg

+1 on Relayer, those remasters were awesome.

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
3 Mustaphas 3 - Heart of Uncle
Any latter day Beatles
Black Uhuru - The Dub Factor
The Police - Regatta De Blanc

rated on sound quality + vibe

The Beatles - Love
Pretty much anything Bjork has recorded.
Anything John Mayer has recorded (or played live, that sick bastard!!!)

I'm also really in love with the first album from Zep... for it's time it sounded pretty damned amazing!!!

Yeah, on St. Anger it sounds like Lars is playing a fucking wind up toy kiddie drum set. What a piece!

Album sound

I've heard plenty of albums/CDs that sound great, but one of the albums that was most influential to me was "All American Boy" by Rick Derringer. This was produced and co-engineered by Bill Szymczyk, who went on to do the Eagles and a lot of other stuff. His sound, to me, was and is still is a gold standard for studio production. More recently, any of Russ Freeman's/the Rippington's stuff sounds awesome to me, although musically it is not that exciting.
