What is your favorite sounding album/song that you have ever heard?

Mine has to be "Songs About Jane" by Maroon 5, "Hell Freezes Over" by the Eagles, and The Black Album by Metallica.

(notice I didn't say "favorite album." I am curious to see what other people like to use as reference material. What albums give you goose bumps when you listen to them?)

Despite it's age, the Beatles "Abbey Road" remains an incredible example of studio engineering. The absolute peak of analogue recording.

the colour and the shape by foo figthers. the guitar on that album sounds great. the drums did too. maybe because dave grohl did both on that album. hmmmmm.

Amused to Death does sound great, although you need to have it turned up to appreciate just how great.

Pearl Jam's Yield I really like the sound on...a little more organic than some but still very clean and punchy. Most of their work with Brendan O'Brien sounded damn good.

Jars of Clay -- Much Afraid. I'm not Christian, and generally dislike Christian music, but that's an amazingly made album.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms

Interesting choice. The general consensus I've heard is that is the bands worst album, at least from a songwriting point of view.

I'm gonna go with Smashing Pumpkins, Gish. They got some really great sound without all the ridiculous over-production of some of the later albums

Also anything by Pain is good. For independent production, they get excellent tone and harmonies.

Really? It's definitely the most unconventional album, the structure of the songs is very strange, but some of the songs give me chills. Same with their song Oh My God.

Betty : Helmet (the best drum sound for the genre)

Lysol : Melvins (the low end is nothing i've ever heard)

Sieamese Dream : Smashing Pumpkins (guitars**cha ching)

Zepplin III ******

I've always thought that the interplay between backups, male and female voices and instruments was great on the "Red Octopus" album by Jefferson Starship. Also, "Overnite Sensation" and "Apostrophe" by FZ are hard to beat for sheer analog precision.

Tool - Lateralus

totally! add aenima to that list for me as well...

i also really love the sound of RATM's evil empire - that album has the best bass i've ever fucking heard

Kinks: Both "Sleepwalker" and "Misfits"...incredible clarity, bass, and lovely sound.

Mirage - Camel

Black Sabbat- Black Sabbath

Deep Purple -Made in Japan

Pink Floyd -Animals

Queen- A night at the opera

Flaming Lips - Solf bulletin (Dave Friddman)
Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics (Dave Friddman)
The Church - Blurred Crusade (Bob Clearmountain)
Talking Heads - More Songs about Buildings and Food (Brian Eno & Talking Heads)
Melt Banana - Charlie (?)

Pretty much anything Dave Friddman. I think he did some Sleater Kinney albums that sound great.
