it was a Pro Co Road Kill distortion pedal (mixed with ambient mic on the body of the guitar). The Road Kill has Gain/Level/Tone controls.
I'll typically put a close-mic on the body of the electric guitar/bass for natural ambience when I record DI & mix to taste. (Tip of the day).
