lyrics are pretty stupid as well.

i mean, how many beethoven and bach tunes had lyrics?

most lyrics these days, are complete throw aways.

or they're whiny, like 'why is my life so hard?'

LOL

and jesus christ, what's with all the super lame bass tracks?

they just go 'doh doh doh doh doh doh doh doh ......'
ad naseum.

in fact, most of todays music is just stupid.

good thing stupid sells!

Solos are stupid.

I disagree, Greg. To me they're like a sex scene in a film. If they're short, intelligent and take the tune somewhere then they can be devastatingly good. If they're just somebody playing a million notes a second, then it's just like really shitty porno. :D

I think Dave Gilmour's a great soloist, except for Comfortably Numb - it's far, far too long.

The MC5-The American Ruse!
Hmmmm......
It's an interesting song that contains the word 'stasis', a word rarely found in dictionaries these days. On the album it's on, there's a great song called "Looking at you" that has 3 solos on it, all pretty neat. The first one is a hoot at the start, the first 27 notes of which comprise one of the funniest pieces of music I'm aware of. The guitarist {I'm not sure if it was Wayne Kramer or Sonic Smith} just starts low and one note at a time gets higher and higher before a bit of shredding. It's hilarious !

Solos are stupid.
Not if you call them obbligatos. :D
In all kinds of music from all kinds of times in history in all kinds of countries, they've been inevitable. Sadly so, in some cases.
I don't honestly believe people actually have a solo that they consider to be the best ever. Unless you only know 8 songs and 5 of them are by Depeche Mode !!

I generally do not like guitar solos... I make exceptions for Randy Rhodes and Jimmy Page

It's crazy all these 100 year old threads being resurrected - its like "night of the living thread" around here :p

It's a sign of the apocalypse, really, the end of the world is nigh. Time for another beer.

Know what's worse than guitard solos? Bass solos. Worse than bass solos? Drum solos.

So many great solos, but how about Pete Townsend in "I can see for miles". Phill Keaggy in "John the revelator", Dan Huff in Michael W. Smith's "Secret Ambition", Brent Mason in Ricky Skaggs "Life's too long" and on and on and on and on..............

Long Hot Summer Night - Hendrix

He tastefully solos through the whole song, never getting in the way. Also, the drums are crazy jazz and a gospel styled piano throughout. But it's never cluttered.

Johnny Greenwood - Paranoid Android solo.

OOooooft now that's something special.

Orrr if anyone has seen Matt Bellamy play the solo for Invincible live then you'll know that he cannot be a human; but an alien, teaching the world about awesomeness.

The problem with solos is that most are just self indulgent masturbation. And they are often boring as hell. Even if it's a great guitar player, a good solo has to be over before you are thinking, God this song is getting boring... They might be fun to play - but so is Xbox 360 - that doesn't mean I want to sit around watching you play Xbox :laughings::laughings::rolleyes:

Worse than bass solos? Drum solos.
Unless a bass solo is about 12 seconds long, forget it !
Worse than bass solos? Drum solos.

Yeah, want to do musical comedy? The too long drum solo is always funny.
The drum solo is one of the most important parts of a musical performance. In the studio or at a gig or listening to it at home, it's a priceless opportunity for studio staff, rest of the band, audience and private listener to go to the toilet, go buy/make a drink, have a quick snog with one's wife or whosoever, write a letter/postcard/e~mail, catch a movie......
