Best Solo Ever (No Nirvana allowed, Or Dave Grohl)

Frank Zappa on the Roxy and Elsewhere album. The solo's on "the son of orange county" that leads into "more trouble everyday" have got to be my all time favorites over anybody. So melodic, so much feeling, I get the chills just thinking about it. Yet so hard, loud and distorted. He was the master of the wah wah pedal. If you haven't heard it you need to. That whole album is one of my all time favorites. I used to go months listening to only that album.
ZAPPA RULES!!! :D

I know you're all gonna call me a n00b but I've always liked the solo that Zakk Wylde did on Perry Mason for Ozzy Osbourne. Awesome tune.

George Harrison, "something"
Andy Summers, "driven To Tears"
Denny Dias, "do It Again" (e. Sitar)

I have to 2nd or 3rd these:

SRV-Little Wing
Eagles-Hotel California
Jimi-Voodoo child
Some Peter Frampton Solo, I cant remember wich song but thought it was awesome.
and add this one,
Rising Force-Far beyond the sun ;)

Jorma Kaukonen,
the end/outro to "Somebody to Love";
and of course,
Paul, George, John interplay on "Carry that Weight"

eddie hazel- maggot brain
ive never heard anything that comes remotely close.
i generally listen to it when someone dies.

I generally do not like guitar solos... I make exceptions for Randy Rhodes and Jimmy Page

It's crazy all these 100 year old threads being resurrected - its like "night of the living thread" around here :p

Larry Carlton/Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne (amazing tone and feeling)

I wonder if I posted in this thread 5 years ago, lol.

Anyway, shredding has never been impressive to me. I'm a fan of solos that make me go back and listen again and again to the point where I can hum every passage, even if I can't play it. A few stand out in my limited musical history.

Anytime (Neal Schon)
Sultans of Swing (Mark Knopfler)
Pride - In The Name Of Love (The Edge) ...not sure if this really qualifies as a solo, but it makes the song.
Ah Mary, by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals...no idea who plays it, but it has a very high "rewind" factor to me. It's just perfect.

Jerry Garcia, Scarlet Begonias 12/31/79 Closing of Winterland. And Phil drops major bombs throughout too.

Best solo ever, bursting with expectation, on the edge of ecstacy but then collapses into oblivion; the genius Will Sergeant of the stupidly named Echo and the Bunnymen. It's here on youtube - "watch?v=7cJ6KxSywj0" (sorry can't post clickable URLs now, as I'm a newbie!), if you are really impatient solo starts at about 2.10

Solos are stupid.

They’re not very contemporary either. I'm still trying to think of a Grohl "lead" break (in thread title)... he tends to intertwine rather than have overt solo's. No doubt I will soon be put in my place, have to slap my head, and say "of course" :)

... or am I just mising the joke now...?
