Should of been shot for even contemplating buying a guitar, and yes so should have i for once thinking he was descent, but that was me following the cattle to the slaughter, now i do the slaughtering, the fact is these punk dicks cant do these grand solos. So they rely on image alone. They have no idea what it takes to master anything, and neither do you or anyone who supports these punk dicks. As you can see im new to this forum, this little thread of mine quickly weeds out the guitarists from the power chord losers.

If there are power chord losers out there who dissagree and can tell me what the mode no 3 of the HIROJOSHI is then please state it before abusing as i will only laugh otherwise.

I cannot even begin to describe how ignorant this post is. By calling those of us who like punk or any sort of music that doesn't have zillion-note solos "power chord losers" and saying that we "have no idea what it takes to master anything", you've done nothing but establish (or confirm) your immaturity.

It was the shred-fest we call the 80's that made me want to play guitar, but it was discovering college radio and bands like The Ramones, R.E.M. and the Sex Pistols that made me realize that you didn't need two hands on the fretboard to make a powerful statement.

You write a great song with a simple solo or no solo at all, and you still have a great song. You write a shitty song with a great solo, you still have a shitty song.

Apparently unlike you, I can appreciate great guitar work but can also appreciate songs without a bunch of fretboard acrobatics. Maybe anyone can "learn a fucking bar chord and move it up and down the neck", but only a select few can turn such into something worth a damn.

You're still young, so maybe eventually you'll get your head out of your ass and learn to appreciate the fact that solos don't make the song and cease insulting those who don't agree with you 100%.

And as to the "mode no 3 of the HIROJOSHI "...I could give a rat's ass. Johnny Ramone didn't need to know it, and neither do I.

Well, I responded, and I don't agree with you. Cobain was a very important guitarist. You want a great guitar solo? How about that cello on their cover of "The Man Who Sold the World"? That is brilliant, dunno who the cellist is though.

Not really sure if these are my favorites, but these are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head:

"Mother Earth, Revelation" Randy Rhoads/Ozzy Osbourne/off of Blizzard of Oz
Just an awesome classical/piano inspired metal solo. Not neo-classical, just awesome.

"Diary of a Madman" Randy Rhoads/Ozzy/Diary of a Madman
Another classical feeling solo and song, with a kind of Basil Palaedorus (conan the barbarian soundtrack) vibe

"Just Killing Time" Zakk Wylde/Black Label Society/Stronger than Death
Not super intricate, but it is dripping with feeling.

"Mr. Scary" George Lynch/Dokken/Tooth and Nail
A 5 minute long intstrumental guitar piece. the whole thing kicks ass.

"Makes them Disappear" Dimebag Darell/Pantera/Reinventing the Steel
Southern blues riffs, with mega gain and screaming harmonics. classic Dimebag vibe.

Listening to him play that old Epiphone is like watching someone walk a wire without a net. He hangs it waaaaay out there and I'm thinking "man, he really screwed the pooch there, no way he can salvage this solo." then BLAMMO he ties it all together with the two notes he has been working toward the whole time and everybody is just left breathless. I love the quote from the New Yorker when they ask him about his playing style he said he has certain notes he likes to play so he figures out how to get to those notes. The interviewer asked which notes those were and David says:

"The ghostly ones"

Damn right.

With seven years and two degrees from Berklee (not to mention another 7 years of studying music before that), I would say I have a pretty damn good idea of how to master many things.

It doesn't change a damn thing. I know enough about harmony and melodic theory to understand that what it all comes down to is you can play any damn note you want at any time, and if you have played them all enough, you will know what it is going to say before you even play it, and you don't even need to think in terms of "scales" or "modes" or any of the other constructs we invent to make it easier to make music.

I'll tell you what, show me one chops guy who can write a riff as solid as Dave Grohl (Everlong, anybody, or My Hero?) or Kurt Cobain (Even if he had never written anything but Smells like Teen Spirit, he would have changed popular music for the better), not to mention Eric Bazilian (check out Joan Osborne's Relish, which is not only one of the best vocal records ever made, but also probably the best single guitar record of the nineties).

On the whole, solos in rock and roll suck, because that is not what rock and roll is about. Sometimes they can fit, but as often as not they just suck. Most rock players can't express themselves over anything more complicated than a blues change, which is fine, but it cuts off a whole range of expression. If you want great solos, listen to the great jazz guys, like Pat Metheny or John McLaughlin, or get away from the guitar and listen to Miles, `Train, Jaco, or Monk. Those guys can say something, and some times they use a lot of notes, other times they just play a couple (Miles had better chops than just about any trumpet player ever, but you would almost never hear him use them).

You miss the point: they have no desire to do the grand solo's for the same reason that I have no desire to pull a passenger bus with a chain attached to my penis: it's pointless, painful, and proves nothing about my manhood.

Now THAT'S comedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


Oh yeah, and I don't think that Mark Knopfler has played a bad note in his life. Damn he is good.
