Oh yeah, and I don't think that Mark Knopfler has played a bad note in his life. Damn he is good.

There are two really cool things about the Sultans of Swing:

1. The way the guitar rhythm parts sound like the Sultan's horn section;
2. The double 'scratch' at the end of one of the solo sections. It just polishes and encapsulates/finalizes it. I don't even know if he was aware of it being anything more than a rhythmic thing he threw in there, but it just sounds great.

I recently saw Knopfler in concert. That guy also has a guitar tone to DIE for! Absolutely phenomenal.

With seven years and two degrees from Berklee (not to mention another 7 years of studying music before that), I would say I have a pretty damn good idea of how to master many things.

It doesn't change a damn thing. I know enough about harmony and melodic theory to understand that what it all comes down to is you can play any damn note you want at any time, and if you have played them all enough, you will know what it is going to say before you even play it, and you don't even need to think in terms of "scales" or "modes" or any of the other constructs we invent to make it easier to make music.

I'll tell you what, show me one chops guy who can write a riff as solid as Dave Grohl (Everlong, anybody, or My Hero?) or Kurt Cobain (Even if he had never written anything but Smells like Teen Spirit, he would have changed popular music for the better), not to mention Eric Bazilian (check out Joan Osborne's Relish, which is not only one of the best vocal records ever made, but also probably the best single guitar record of the nineties).

On the whole, solos in rock and roll suck, because that is not what rock and roll is about. Sometimes they can fit, but as often as not they just suck. Most rock players can't express themselves over anything more complicated than a blues change, which is fine, but it cuts off a whole range of expression. If you want great solos, listen to the great jazz guys, like Pat Metheny or John McLaughlin, or get away from the guitar and listen to Miles, `Train, Jaco, or Monk. Those guys can say something, and some times they use a lot of notes, other times they just play a couple (Miles had better chops than just about any trumpet player ever, but you would almost never hear him use them).

Hey mr Degree loser, then you should be able to answer a couple of questions for me to validate your marvelous bar chord mind.
The first one being the answer to mode no 3 of the Hirojoshi.
2nd, Minimise x^x.
I better translate that for a bard chord loser such as you, it means find the variable x to which satifies the codition of minimisation.
Go for it bar chord berklee dick head.

All you need to write a song like Smells Like Teen Spirit....is kindergarten.

your marvelous bar chord mind.

Go for it bar chord berklee dick head.

First, if you intend to insult people on the board with blanket terms, at least take the time to find the correct spelling of your accusations.

It's "b-a-r-r-e" chord. Barre chord.

Barre chord.

Since you seem to be clueless about that piece of guitar trivia I could give a damn about the one trick pony that you keep trotting out.

If you learn music by a formula you produce formulaic music.

You may wanna write that down somewhere as it is the single biggest contributing factor to the death of the metal guitar god.

Second.

I am arrogant. Arrogance is almost a neccessary component of certain types of musicians. I was arrogant enough to join this board and make my first post a challenge to the goal of nearly every member of this board: production quality.

I am also smart enough to realize how much there was to learn here and honest enough to admit when I am wrong.

I am also humble enough to realize that there is a wealth of knowledge here that cannott be matched in many other places. There are a lot of people on this board who: have been what you want to be, are what you want to be, or soon will be what you wish you were.

Do you want to work in the music industry as a career? This board will help you do that in most capacities from performing musician to engineer. What the board cannot overcome is your insane desire to piss off every person you meet by waving your imaginary dick around.

No one cares about your views on guitar solos more than they care about your lack of maturity.

My advice is offerred in the hope that you will heed some of it, register under another username and come back and try to learn something.

Thanks mr spelling b champion

Best response ever,

im sorry for being a dick,
seriously, i know what you guys are on about when it comes to shredding and things like that i appreciate the sweet solos to, that dont contain shred, id be fool not to.
I just dont like myself very much and its not fair of me to take it out on other people.
Also i try to come across smart, but im the most foolish stupid person who has ever lived.
Anyway lets keep listening.
I Love you all.
I am a loser.

Ya see, the thing is, that once you start a thread, you give it away. That means that you can't define the terms of what people can think is a good solo before hand because it stopped being your property when you hit submit.

If you are not of a certain age then you will not understand how perfect Cobain's solo's were for his time. After a decade of gunslinging axemen that put no more emotion in their solo's than a ham sandwich (see Nuno Bettencourt) Cobain's anti-guitar hero style was incredible and refreshing. I have to agree with Light on "The Colour and the Shape". The whole album is a shining example of innovative guitar playing.

"Big Love" - Lindsay Buckingham
"I Dream A Highway" - David Rawlings
"Nothing as it Seems" - Mike McCready

I don't know how many people realize it but Mike McCready has some chops. :)

Mate im 26 and that maggot was in prime time when i was a teenager.
I learnt every song Nirvana Did on the guitar, Kurt is a lame ass,
Should of been shot for even contemplating buying a guitar, and yes so should have i for once thinking he was descent, but that was me following the cattle to the slaughter, now i do the slaughtering, the fact is these punk dicks cant do these grand solos. So they rely on image alone. They have no idea what it takes to master anything, and neither do you or anyone who supports these punk dicks. Any body can learn a fucking bar chord and move it up and down the neck, give me a break.

I see there are some people who have class, who have responded. Only they can understand what im talking about.
Thank you very much, you know who you are.

As you can see im new to this forum, this little thread of mine quickly weeds out the guitarists from the power chord losers.

If there are power chord losers out there who dissagree and can tell me what the mode no 3 of the HIROJOSHI is then please state it before abusing as i will only laugh otherwise.

so, you're saying that knowledge of scales supercedes creativity, note selection, and the concept of playing simple but soulful? I don't think Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Robert Johnson, or probably any of the great past blues players could have told you what the 3rd mode in the Hirojoshi scale is.

Power chord losers? Oh my fucking god........what are you 9? Sounds like it's time to get your nose out of the Guitar Grimoire. Simple does not equal shitty.

DAMN YOU! I should have thought of that one. I mean, if you want to talk about an absolutely perfect combination of fit for the song and just MONSTER chops, that is IT.

"Cowards can never be moral."
M.K. Gandhi

That is one mighty bad ass guitar line. :)

FYI, There used to be a thread with similiar topic around...

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=87587

Well, I believe "best" is the most difficult word to apply when taste involved... There are so many aspect incorporated to define what a great solo would be. I'm not very much good guitarist myself, just to company myself writing a song or have some blues with my friends in Saturday night jam... I agree that solo guitar should cover as many aspect as possible. Name it emotions, feel, "sentence", length, song structure, sound, chord, tonality, layer, unique, character, originality, technique, etc etc etc....

Sometime enjoying them is better than to judge them...

Better yet, lets learn from them...

ps. doogle, this is realy a good thread specialy with you in it.. don't feel bad to state your oppinion, I'm sure things getting better... Love you all too...

Yes! I meant to throw my support behind this solo when it was mentioned earlier. Only Neil Young could make a one note solo so fucking cool.

There should probably be a seperate thread for "Best Neil Young Guitar Solo" because my vote would not necessarily go to Cinamon Girl. I would vote for Words or Cowgirl In The Sand. Good Neil is usually about 10 minutes long.

I'll throw in my two cents:
Eric Clapton/Cream: Crossroads-Although he hasn't played like this in a few decades, there's no denying he was on fire at the time.
Stevie Ray Vaughan-Testify-Need I say more?
Jimi Hendrix-Voodoo Chile
Stevie Ray Vaughan-Little Wing
David Gilmour-Comfortably Numb
Led Zeppelin-Stairway to Heaven-Although it's painful to hear in any guitar shop these days, Jimmy Page on a telecaster that day will go down in history. I know I'm gonna catch crap for this one.
Black Crowes/Marc Ford-No Speak No Slave-Personal Favorite.

How about a local...Purge on "I'm Not Ready To Die"...We got some kickass guitarists right here on this board.....he whacked out a solo for me, as I was unable to fit anything in this tune. Fit's well. :D
How cool is that?? Thanks, Dogman!! Although it's no secret to anyone that Timothy Lawler and Chris Finster will blow me away any day of the week. Those guys have the perfect combination of feel and technique...and they even know how to record!!

Vernon Reid on "Cult of Personality".
Probably the greatest "agree to disagree" point in rock/metal solo history. I agree with Guitar World's assessment in their countdown of 100 Worst Licks/Riffs/Solos Of All Time:

"Vernon Reid shows us what it would sound like if you tried to play a solo with a boat motor."

I know for a fact that Vernon Reid can play very well--seen and heard him do it several times. This solo always reminds me of non-musician buddies of mine coming over to my house, picking up my guitar, hitting every stomp box they can find, and just trying to blaze away aimlessly because my beer suddenly turned them into a shredder.

And yet, I can never get tired of this song. Something seems to just work here. And isn't that what it's all about? I certainly won't take Light's stance that he displayed "monster chops" on that tune, but the solo does exactly what it's supposed to...it's an appropriate extension of the song.

There are two really cool things about the Sultans of Swing:

1. The way the guitar rhythm parts sound like the Sultan's horn section;
2. The double 'scratch' at the end of one of the solo sections. It just polishes and encapsulates/finalizes it. I don't even know if he was aware of it being anything more than a rhythmic thing he threw in there, but it just sounds great.

SOS turned me on to using 3rds in a riff so it can't be all bad.

They did rip off the verse chords from Black Magic Woman though ;)

There are a only few Dire Straits tracks I can still get a guilty pleasure from, but I have to admit MK is a fantastic guitarist.

I hope you play the Hirojoshi scale using just intonation.

BTW - it's 'barre' and mr has a capital 'M'.

If people that play barre chords are somehat below you then I guess Jim Hall should be licking your boots right now and Lenny Breau should leap out of his grave and grovel at your feet.

Persoanlly I just feel sorry for you - you're making yourself look like a complete idiot.
